This is my daughter and her family. I am trying to help them raise money for medical expenses as well as time off work to help care for him after his bone marrow transplant.

They are a young couple (Trevor and Brittanie) and just starting out with two children (Christian and Sebastián, 12 and 2), two dogs (Lincoln and Max), and two cats (Kitty and Gizmo), and a mortgage.

They are volunteers for youth soccer.

With no insurance coverage or FML, they will be battling to stay afloat as well as cover medical costs to and from Ohio's research hospital for EBV. They are told they don't know much; his disease is a rare form. I'm not asking for much; every dime adds up.

Last year, our world turned upside down. Trevor was hospitalized, and doctors ran every test imaginable—scans, labs, biopsies—searching for answers. The first terrifying possibility they raised was lymphoma. We braced ourselves for the worst, waiting for pathology to confirm.

When the results came back, it wasn’t cancer—but it wasn’t simple, either. The biopsy showed widespread inflammation throughout his abdomen, organs, and lymph nodes. That finding along with highly elevated liver enzymes led us to a liver biopsy, which finally gave us a name for what was happening: Chronic Active Epstein-Barr Virus (CAEBV).

Most people—about 95% of the population—carry Epstein-Barr Virus dormant in their body without even knowing it. But for reasons no one can fully explain, Trevor’s reactivation was far from ordinary. His immune system has been under constant attack, leaving him unable to fight off even the smallest infection. On top of that, CAEBV has been linked to several types of cancers and autoimmune diseases—another fear we’ve had to carry every single day.

The past year has been filled with constant fevers, pain, inflammation, and frustration that have left him bed bound. There are so few doctors who truly understand this disease, and we’ve been pulled in so many directions—specialists, oncologists, endless appointments, countless labs—yet so few answers.

When we finally sat down with an oncologist, we were told something no family ever wants to hear: the only known treatment is a bone marrow transplant.

For months, we’ve been stuck in limbo—waiting, hoping for another option. Now, a year later, we’ve been referred to a specialist in Ohio next month who is actively researching this disease. We are praying he can offer something new… but as of now, it’s looking like we’ll have to move forward with transplant. Due to this disease wreaking more havoc on his organs- fluid in his lungs enlarged spleen with possible clots and a bad gallbladder landing us back in Rex.

If that’s the path we take, Trevor will need a week of chemotherapy before the procedure, then remain in the hospital for about a month. After that, because of the high risk of infection and graft-versus-host disease, he’ll need to live close to the hospital for another 100 days with round-the-clock care—provided by a family member, not a nurse.

With two kids, a home, and pets, this means I’ll likely be traveling back and forth to Chapel Hill constantly. And to make things even more complicated, because we aren’t legally married, I don’t qualify for FMLA—so this will be a huge strain in every way imaginable.

We know the road ahead will be long, exhausting, and emotional. But we also know we have an amazing support system. Any prayers, encouragement, or good thoughts you can send our way are more appreciated than we can put into words ❤️
