It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Coach Sixto Gonzalez, a cherished leader, mentor, and friend within the Redlands soccer community.
Born in Hidalgo, Mexico, Coach Sixto's love for soccer began in the shadow of Pachuca FC, where the game wasn't just sport-it was life. He played for Pachuca's youth squads and Titanes de Tulancingo before immigrating to the United States, where he continued to follow his passion for the game.
In the U.S., Sixto became a pillar of the California Soccer League, embracing the diversity of the sport and learning the deeper meaning of teamwork and unity. In 2007, he began coaching with AYSO Redlands and eventually devoted over a decade to club teams and to building the Aquinas High School soccer program. He grew the Aquinas program from a group of multi-sport athletes using soccer to stay in shape, into an elite team that won the CIF Championship in 2018.
Coach Sixto was more than a coach-he was a motivator, a role model, and a symbol of determination. Whether leading teams to victory or lifting players after tough losses, he coached with humility, heart, and an unshakable belief in every player's potential.
"Sixto and I go way back to when I coached Victoria, his middle daughter." shared Norma Mendez, Director of Coaches at Redlands Blues SC. "He was a respectful man-passionate about the game and a tireless advocate for his players. He treated them like his own. Sixto lived life to the fullest, both on and off the field. He would want us to continue playing the sport he loved and to face life's challenges the way he did-head-on."
Coach Sixto is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Gonzalez, and their four children: Jonathan Gonzalez, Estefania Gonzalez, Victoria Gonzalez, and Alexandria Gonzalez. Our hearts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time. We are forever grateful for the time we shared with Coach Sixto and for the legacy he leaves behind.
His spirit will live on in every player, every match, and every goal inspired by his love for the game.
Rest in peace, Coach Sixto. You will never be forgotten.
