A few years ago, our dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While many cases of prostate cancer can be successfully treated when caught early, his cancer was diagnosed at a much later stage, making his journey far more complex. Rather than a single surgery or short course of treatment, he has spent the last several years undergoing ongoing medical care, specialized injections, and medications to help keep the cancer under control.

Our dad lives full-time in Mexico and does not have health insurance or medical coverage. Every doctor's visit, treatment, medication, and injection must be paid for out of pocket. Some of the injections he depends on cost more than $5,000 each. In addition, he must travel to another city to receive treatment from the medical team where he has established care, creating additional travel and lodging expenses. The treatments often leave him feeling very sick for several days afterward.

For the past few years, my sisters and I have done everything we can to help cover these costs so our dad can continue receiving the care he needs. As the expenses have continued to grow and his ability to work has declined, we have reached a point where we can no longer do it alone.
