In Loving Memory of Mohamad Rustom, Our Habibi
On May 1, 1998, an angel was placed on this earth to fulfill a mission. Mohamad Rustom also known as Nasar, was born with a heart so big it touched everyone who crossed his path. His life, though tragically short, was a testament to the power of kindness, resilience, and connection.
On October 31, 2024, Mohamad and his family arrived in the U.S., stepping into a new chapter filled with challenges, hopes, and dreams. Unfortunately, their arrival was not what they expected. They harsh reality of living downtown Lowell in a very busy Neighborhood was shocking, leaving the family overwhelmed on their first night in their new home. Despite this rough start, the family—and Mohamad in particular—handled it with strength and grace, recognizing the incredible effort of those who worked tirelessly to secure housing for families in need.
At just 26, Mohamad was the embodiment of resilience and generosity. He refused interpreters, determined to learn English on his own, practicing tirelessly with his phone and repeating words until they felt natural on his tongue. His courage to immerse himself in a language and culture so different from his own was nothing short of inspiring.
A gifted barber, Mohamad transformed a small room in his apartment into a studio, where he generously cut hair and brought people together. Every Friday, I’d sit in his chair for a cut, sharing Turkish coffee and conversations that spanned life’s big questions and small joys. It was in those moments that Mohamad taught me about faith, love, and the power of human connection. He even introduced us to something we now consider a little treasure: ketchup powder. We’d sprinkle it on fresh popcorn made by his mom, Mariam, during those cherished Friday evenings.
Mohamad had a deep bond with his family, especially his beloved mother, Mariam. On those Friday nights, he’d often sit on the floor in front of her armchair, resting his head in her lap while she gently rubbed his hair. Watching them together was a reminder of the profound love between a mother and her child—a love that transcends words and fills a room with warmth.
Within days of arriving, Mohamad volunteered at our agency. He became a vital presence, helping families adjust to their new lives, fixing what was broken—whether it was a leaky faucet or a heavy heart. Even with limited English, he bridged gaps with his warm smile, compassionate gestures, and an unparalleled ability to connect.
Mohamad loved music, and his favorite artist was Adele. He found comfort and joy in her songs, especially “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Hometown Glory.” We hope that wherever he is now, he is setting fire to the rain in his own peaceful and beautiful way.
Mohamad was more than a client; he was a brother, a friend, and a mentor. He brought together people from different walks of life, uniting us in ways we never imagined. His dedication to learning, his love for his family, and his selflessness touched everyone he met.
On December 27, 2024, Mohamad suffered two devastating heart attacks. Today, January 7, 2025, we had to say goodbye as his body could no longer fight. His passing has left a void that words cannot fill. His family is heartbroken, and his mother, Mariam, is devastated by the loss of her son, her Habibi.
We are asking for your help to honor Mohamad’s memory and support his family during this unimaginably difficult time. His family has nothing but the love and support of our agency. They need all the help they can get—be it financial, emotional, or spiritual. Your donations, no matter the size, will help them find their footing and start to rebuild after this immense loss.
Every donation will go directly to his family, helping them with basic needs and allowing them the time and space to grieve. Let’s come together, as Mohamad always did, to lift those in need.
On behalf of the International Institute of New England, we would like to thank Mohamad Rustom (Abu) and Mariam (Ummi), his beautiful parents who brought him into this world and raised a son who made such an incredible impact on everyone he met. Thank you also to his dear brothers Abdul, Akido, Waddah, and Enam, who have now become our brothers, too.
Mohamad, our Habibi, you were an angel on earth, and now you soar as an angel in peace. Thank you for touching our lives in ways we will never forget.
