A freak highway accident has left two members of an Amherst, NY, family with catastrophic injuries and in need of your help as they confront colossal medical expenses and a long and uncertain recovery.

Both of Masud Biswas’ legs have been amputated above the knee, and doctors have performed a half dozen surgeries to save the legs of his 12-year-old son, Marif.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 11, Amherst resident Masud, 43, and his son were returning home to the U.S. from the airport in Toronto when they were involved in a collision with another vehicle on Highway 403 in Mississauga, Ontario.

Masud and the driver of the other vehicle parked on the right shoulder of the highway. Masud and Marif exited their vehicle to inspect damage and exchange information with the other driver. That’s when a third vehicle veered and smashed into one of the cars on the side of the freeway, causing it to plow into both father and son, pinning them beneath.

Masud and Marif sustained permanently life-altering injuries. Masud remains hospitalized in Ontario in stable condition. He is a loving husband and father. Before the accident, he was an avid gardener who generously shared vegetables and produce with neighbors. He was dedicated to helping others in his career at the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

Now he needs your assistance. Masud is the sole provider for his family of four, including wife, Mita, and teenage son, Maif. Their family requires financial assistance for living expenses and years of costly medical care, including home renovations to accommodate two disabled family members.

Marif has been transferred to a hospital closer to home in Buffalo where he is in stable condition. He faces the possibility of dozens more surgeries in the hopes of saving his legs and restoring his ability to walk. Before the accident, Marif enjoyed playing soccer and basketball. In the hospital he has kept his hands and mind busy by building Lego sets. Marif hopes to be well enough to rejoin classmates and friends at Amherst Middle School, where he is an excellent student in seventh grade.
