Hello, my name is Beverly Walker. I was born and raised in Jamaica and now live in Canada. I’m reaching out today to raise funds for emergency aid in Jamaica, for my family, friends, communities, and anyone in immediate need in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. This cause is deeply important to me because Jamaica is my home, and the people affected are not just names or faces on the news, they are my loved ones, my community, and my roots.

Why this matters to me

I came from Jamaica so I am aware of the strength and resilience of our people but I also know how quickly a disaster can turn lives upside down. Hurricane Melissa has caused catastrophic damage in many parts of the island: homes destroyed, power and water cut, roads and infrastructure damaged such as hospitals and school, many people displaced. Many have lost everything in my community including my own family and friends.

My heart goes out to everyone affected, I have family and friends back home, and I feel a strong responsibility to help however I can. There are rural areas in Jamaica like my community where international aid may not be accessible or distributed so these areas would be my priority. This is not just about sending money, it’s about standing with my homeland, family and community in a time of crisis.

What the funds will be used for

Here’s how I plan to allocate every dollar raised the goal is to be as transparent and tangible as possible:

Many homes in my family / community have lost roofs or are flooded, or made uninhabitable. We’ll fund tarps, plywood, roofing materials, basic supplies to rebuild damaged homes.

Funds will be used to acquire food and clean drinking water for members that need it.
