I am raising support for my family after a devastating crash caused by an impaired driver that not only shattered our family but took the life of my mother. In an instant, our world changed completely. My nephew Carlos suffered a broken collarbone and is now living with severe PTSD from the accident. Carlos's father, my brother, suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a fractured spine, and was placed on a ventilator. His wife, Guadalupe, suffered a fractured spine, broken ribs, a broken leg and foot, damage to her right ear, and swelling in the head. Both remain in critical condition, are undergoing extensive surgeries, and will need multiple surgeries in the days and weeks ahead. On top of this heartbreak, my mother and our children's beloved grandmother passed away at the scene of the crash, leaving our family with the pain of an unexpected loss and funeral expenses no family is ever prepared for.

The need for help did not end on the day of the crash. As my brother Carlos and his wife Guadalupe remain unable to work, their household bills continue week after week, including rent, insurance, and expenses that are due without exception, all while medical bills keep growing. Their three children are also carrying an enormous burden as they try to care for both parents during this crisis. Their two daughters, who were not in the accident, have had to take time away from work to stay at the hospital to be by their brother and parent's side, creating even more financial strain for them.

En un instante, nuestro mundo cambió por completo. Mi sobrino Carlos sufrió una fractura de clavícula y ahora padece un trastorno de estrés postraumático grave a consecuencia del accidente. El padre de Carlos —mi hermano— sufrió fractura de cráneo, fractura de costillas, colapso pulmonar y fractura de columna, y tuvo que ser conectado a un respirador artificial. Su esposa, Guadalupe, sufrió fractura de columna, fractura de costillas, fractura de pierna y pie, daños en el oído derecho e inflamación cerebral. Ambos permanecen en estado crítico, están siendo sometidos a intervenciones quirúrgicas complejas y necesitarán más operaciones en los próximos días y semanas. Además de este dolor inmenso, mi madre —la querida abuela de nuestros hijos— falleció en el lugar del accidente, dejando a nuestra familia sumida en el dolor de una pérdida inesperada y enfrentándose a gastos funerarios para los que ninguna familia está preparada. La necesidad de ayuda no terminó el día del accidente.
