My name is Lisette van Windt and I’m raising funds for the immense needs that arose due to the drowning of 7 victims on Marowijne River on June 1st. My sister, Lucinda, has been married to Sammy Gunther for over 40 years and they’re directly related to the 7, all family members as well. The sorrow is great, the need is immense.

The night of the accident, sudden and extremely strong winds swept through the region, making the river very turbulent. The boat, carrying 15 people, capsized and people struggled for their lives. Thankfully, the lives of 8 people were spared, but the 7, including 3 children, drowned. Nothing could have prepared the families for such an immense tragedy among a close-knit community.

A couple drowned, leaving behind 2 small girls; a mother left behind after her 2 young sons drowned. These are just 2 stories I’m mentioning, but every life lost carries a unique story and immense grief for the ones suddenly left behind. Funds collected will be honestly dispersed among the families, including care of the children who are left without their parents. Funeral arrangements are in process and the date is fast approaching.
