Approaching one year since Arlo arrived, he's getting ready to transfer to another facility while mom and dad prepare to move. Already miles from their friends, family, jobs, and community, the family has made the tough decision to move to Seattle so Arlo can have the best care possible. Here is his story: One tiny, incredible fighter.
When newlyweds Desiree and Ray found out they were expecting Arlo, they imagined a summer birth and a quiet first year of marriage. Instead, their lives changed in an instant in May 2025. Due to severe preeclampsia, Arlo Hill arrived months ahead of his August due date, weighing just over one pound.
Arlo was life-flighted from Bend 120 miles from home at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland. He has survived pneumonia, hernia surgery, and a tracheostomy.
The Reality Right Now
While we originally hoped for a February homecoming, Arlo’s journey has taken a difficult turn. He recently battled a Staph infection, and his fragile lungs collapsed whenever he got upset or overexerted. Because of these setbacks, the family and medical team have decided to transfer Arlo to a different medical facility based in Seattle.
The Toll on the Family
For almost a year, this family has been split in two. Desiree remains by Arlo’s side at the Ronald McDonald House, while Ray travels back and forth from Madras to Portland to balance work and family. The emotional and financial weight of nearly a year in the NICU/PICU is unimaginable.
How You Can Help Arlo’s Village
We are asking for your prayers and, if you are able, financial support. As the medical bills climb and the "finish line" moves further away, these funds will cover:
Ongoing Medical Expenses: Costs not covered by insurance for his ongoing critical care in a facility.
Moving Costs: the family has made the tough choice to move to Seattle.
Travel & Daily Essentials: Helping Ray and Desiree stay by Arlo’s side without the crushing weight of travel costs and lost wages.
Arlo is a fighter, but even the strongest fighters need a village behind them. Thank you for being part of his.
