Aid for Derry Rydell Mallory’s Medical Debt

Thanks to doners ... Mr. Mallory's Medical Debt has been reduced by $1,488!

I am John Williams, a resident of Spalding County, Georgia. I am writing in regard to a friend of mine by the name of Derry Rydell Mallory. He is a 60-year-old disabled American who was a productive, big rig commercial driver for a decade until his lifelong disease of Charcot Foot (caused by nerve damage) forced him in 2023 into his present circumstance of being disabled and unemployed. In December 2023, he also suffered a mild heart attack which burdened him with a debt in the amount of $9,414 (medical/hospital expenses). He then applied for and was placed on Social Security Disability Insurance and Medicare. Mr. Mallory’s only income is from Social Security Disability Insurance in the amount of $1,806/month. He has no other means of support other than the kindness of his former employer and his church. His debts have been turned over to debt collectors who continually push for payment. He has no means to eliminate his debt.

He lives in a 400-square-foot home that has an entry room, a bedroom, a basic kitchen, and a bathroom. This very small house has only minimal necessities (no internet, cable, or television). His only connection to the outside world is a radio and flip-phone (not a smartphone). The rent of $800 per month is 44% of his monthly Social Security income. He has no credit cards and no credit card debt. He literally lives check to check, on a cash-only basis. Rydell must choose which bill to pay and which bill to skip each month. He also needs a new mobility scooter to get around, which costs in the range of $2,000. His current scooter was purchased in 2017 and is in poor condition.

If I were able, I would pay off this debt today; however, I cannot do it alone. I am hoping to find others who are financially able to give a helping hand to Mr. Mallory.

To that end, I am setting up this $12,000 GoFundMe account to help Mr. Mallory pay off his debts (now in the hands of two debt collectors) and buy a mobility scooter to replace his current one. If you can find it in your heart and within your financial means to help Mr. Mallory, both he and I would be extremely grateful for your kindness.

As the late Dr. Frank Harrington, Atlanta minister, said years ago, "You cannot help all those in need; however, you can help the one standing in front of you now."

Thank you for helping Mr. Mallory.
