Asking for help has never been easy for me, but right now, my family needs it. My husband, Chris, has been struggling with declining health for the past five years. What began as small, unclear symptoms gradually worsened, and after countless tests and visits to doctors here locally, we still didn’t have any answers. For the past four years, Chris has been unable to work.

In search of answers, we went to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, thinking we’d finally get some clarity. However, after over three years and nine trips back and forth, multiple tests, and various specialists, the doctors continue to tell us “it’s not that” and recommend even more tests—each more expensive than the last.

Currently, we owe over $4,000 to Mayo Clinic after insurance, and we can’t even begin thinking about next steps until that debt is cleared. Chris qualifies for Social Security Disability and will qualify for Medicare next month, but right now, we’re stuck.

I’m deeply worried about keeping our home and taking care of our daughters while everything else seems to be draining away. But what worries me most is that we still haven’t found any answers or treatment options that could improve Chris’s quality of life.

Chris struggles to get around the house and uses a walker. Thankfully, a power recliner has given him some independence, allowing him to enjoy family time. But we know that we will soon need to make modifications to our home to accommodate his needs and make it easier for me to care for him. We don’t plan to sell our home because, honestly, we couldn’t find an apartment for less than what we pay for our mortgage.
