Hello Everyone,
My name is Rachel Poirier and I’m starting a GoFundMe to help my Dad, Chris Poirier, with his unexpected medical bills. There have been a series of unfortunate events that have led up to the mountain of medical debt he is facing. I am going to give you a brief timeline of what occurred.
My Dad had to undergo foot surgery back in January 2022. He slipped and fell on ice outside of his home on one of the coldest nights of the year. It left him unconscious for hours before paramedics arrived. The accident resulted in frostbite on all of his fingers and toes. The frostbite was so severe on his toes they had to be amputated.
The road to recovery has been long and difficult for him. Having to navigate life without toes is traumatic and challenging in itself. Between learning how to walk again and battling with insurance companies to pay for the procedure and after care, it has become overwhelming.
Now, fast forward to this year January 2025. My Dad slipped and fell again on ice outside of his home. Fortunately, he was with a friend who was able to get him to the hospital quickly. The fall fractured his Humerus bone, which goes from your elbow to the shoulder, and separated his shoulder. This has led to a lengthy recovery process. He was not able to recover at home and had to be admitted to a rehab facility.
At the rehab facility he contracted an infection on the bottom of this foot from a healing blister. A trip to the ER diagnosed Osteomyelitis in two of his toe bones and the surrounding tissue. The tissue contained E Coli and several other bacteria. Surgery was performed, something my Dad was not expecting. Some of the infected bone was cut out along with some of the surrounding tissue. Thankfully they caught it early, otherwise the foot would have had to been amputated.
The hospitalization of his shoulder and second foot surgery have drained all of his health insurance for the year to recover at a skilled nursing facility. He now must pay out of pocket for post-surgery wound care. I can’t imagine having to undergo shoulder and foot recovery at the same time. He is limited to a bed and a wheelchair just to give you a picture of the severity of the situation. Medical bills should not be a thing he needs to worry about on top of it all.
My Dad is one of the best people I know. He’s always there to lend a helping hand. Something that he has instilled in me. This person will do anything for anyone. Now let's return that same generosity back to him. I know times are tough right now on everyone. If you don’t have the funds to donate that is totally understandable. Sharing this GoFundMe is just as substantial as donating. A little goes a long way! The funds raised will go towards his existing medical debt and the costs for the skilled nursing facility he is recovering in.
Thank you all for your support and taking the time out to read this.
