These are words I never expected to be writing, but as the news has spread like wildfire, I will simply say that our community has suffered yet another a tremendous loss. It is devastating and comes as a complete shock that none of us could have prepared for. Campo was a fixture in our venues and in rooms across Denver for decades now, and the loss we are all feeling, as a community and as people who have known and worked with Campo for years, is monumental.
Campo loved the job… he loved all of us. He was always good for an encouraging word and never not there in a pinch if you needed him to show up for you. He’d do it, without question, maybe with a bit of hem-hawing, but he always showed up. Campo was my friend.. he was your friend..
I really don’t know how to begin to reconcile this new nightmarish reality.. but I do know that a common theme of the memories that are being shared is how genuinely Campo loved. He was a mentor to so many.. He remembered the little things about you and always made a point to ask about it and check in. He looked out for you. He was a beacon of encouragement, and everyone’s biggest cheerleader. I know that from personal experience, as he watched my professional transition and knew exactly what to say, when I felt in over my head, to put the wind back in my sails. That isn’t a unique story : He was, simply put, “that guy” to each and every one of the dear people in his life, and they are legion, it turns out. I am thankful for what we have in each other.. the support that this community provides for one another and the way you show up for your people.. THAT… that is exactly why we do what we do and what makes this unparalleled loss so abysmally heartbreaking. Camps was a shining example of it.
I won’t continue to try to put into words what isn’t really quantifiable,.. a lot of you have been leaning on one another, please keep doing that.. as we’ve been cruelly reminded over and again, we never know what’s around the river bend.. be good to one another, love each other.. all we really have is today and all we’ve really got is one another. At the end of the day, this is not a loss we recover from..
Tyler Campo was One of One.
