I am writing on behalf of my brother Frankie and sister-in-law Noemi who have spent the last 10 days in hospital, with their daughter Emma who is battling an unexpected blood infection.

My niece Emma, who has been courageously battling Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) since she was two years old, was hospitalized on May 17th, 2025, due to a severe infection and life-threatening fever, necessitating her placement in an induced coma. The infection resulted in cerebral edema, which an MRI scan later confirmed as a global hypoxic brain injury. Presently, Emma is on a ventilator and has been in a coma for over ten days, with ongoing complications hindering her recovery.

My niece is fortunate to have some health coverage that will hopefully offset some of the medical bills, but it's likely that it won't cover all of her out-of-pocket expenses and follow-up care. In addition, there are numerous unforeseen expenses that are arising, including deductibles, time off work, travel, and aftercare. Despite her rapidly accumulating medical bills from being hospitalized for over a week and still in the ICU, she remains a strong and resilient little girl who is fighting hard.
