My name is Jennifer Bartlett, and I am a poet and writer.
In April 2025, my dear friend Deanna (Ortiz) Powley was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This came as a shock to all who know her.
Deanna has been in my life for most of it. A few years older than me, we met when I was 19 and she was 26. Deanna and I were roommates all throughout our colleges years. We took classes together and graduated on the same day. After I moved to New York City, Deanna came to visit often. She helped me raise my son. Deanna has deep ties to my father, my ex-husband, my in-laws, and many of my high school friends. She is dearly beloved by all.
Deanna has a son of her own, a wonderful daughter-in-law, and four young grandchildren. I have watched Deanna build her career. She is a writer, poet, and musician. She was a bookseller for many years and worked other retail jobs before launching her business as a piano teacher for children and adults. Deanna is patient, shockingly funny, empathetic and a gifted musician -- all qualities which make her a great teacher.
Deanna is fiercely independent. However, because she runs a small business, she may not be able to earn money which she undergoes surgery and recovery. As her friend, I hope to get her all the financial resources that she needs to cover her rent, bills, food, and maybe hire extra help.
She is so special to me. I have lost so many friends, and I am dedicated to helping those who need it. Please consider donating.
