Aid Dan's Fight Against Guillain-Barré

Donation protected

Hi, this is Vanessa, I am here to help rally support for my in laws, Dan and Joy. On July 24th of this year, Dan was admitted to the ICU under the assumption that he had meningitis. Every day since he has declined in health, both mental and physical. Most recently Dan has been put on a ventilator, under sedation. This unpredictable turn of events has led them to be stuck in Alabama, without the support, both financial and mental, of their family and friends. As full time RV'ers they are left in the unfortunate predicament of not knowing when they can go back to work. Please consider donating while we try to navigate this difficult time.

Our family has not been strangers to the ups and downs of life as last year Dan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Days later Joy was diagnosed with renal cancer. With Joys nephrectomy and recovery there was a huge strain put on their lifestyle and of course their savings. But as we all know, the bills don't stop, and life hurdles forward. So they set back on the road, hoping, we were out of the woods. Shortly after arriving in Alabama, Dan spiked a fever, then he began getting confused, saying he didn't feel right, if you know anyone with MS you know this could mean something serious. Off to the hospital they went, where 2 days later on July 26, he became paralyzed from the neck down and had minimal movement in his fingers. August 2nd he lost the ability to swallow, a few days later they put in a feeding tube. Then on the 8th his diaphragm became paralyzed and he was intubated. After over 2 weeks of being hospitalized his doctors suspect he has Guillain-Barré Syndrome. We are hoping to have him flown to a hospital here in NC with a Neuro ICU that can do the Plasmapheresis treatment he needs to get better.

Over the years, I've had the honor of seeing them become pillars of strength, love and generosity in every community they create. Whether its family, friends, or professional work settings, they come in, take charge and hold you tight. Ive also seen the toll every storm they've weathered has taken on them. Now is the time to let them lean on us. They say Faith is taking the first step, even when you can't see the whole staircase, and my wish is that we can be the light that illuminates that first step.
Unfortunately we do not know what the road ahead looks like, we do not know if this new diagnosis is the correct one. We do not know how long recovery is or when it will begin. In the meantime Joy is left with the burden of advocating, caring, and traveling to unknown lengths.
The money we raise will help cover Joy, and their beloved dog Henrys:
  • travel
  • food
  • lodging
  • monthly bills

Please keep them in your prayers, we will update as things unfold. Every little bit helps so thank you in advance!
