Help Collin Long Recover After a Traumatic Brain Injury
“All I did was go to work and try to work my (tail) off.”
That’s what Collin mouthed from his hospital bed, with pain in his eyes, as he looked up at his mom, Amy, and his dad, Anthony. That phrase will stay with his parents forever. Because working hard is what Collin does—it’s who he is.
About Collin
Before July 30, 2025, Collin was living the life of a typical 20-year-old. He spent time with friends, played golf, taught himself guitar, and was enrolled at Southern Union Community College in Opelika, Alabama. He had also recently started a job at the Auburn University Club golf course, where he worked outdoors laying sod and cutting grass—work he genuinely enjoyed.
The Accident
On July 30th, Collin and a coworker, Liam, were finishing their shift and returning a John Deere Gator to the maintenance shed. As they drove down a concrete path, the Gator—loaded with sod—gained too much speed, flipped, and struck a pine tree. Both boys were thrown from the vehicle, their legs tangled, and Collin’s skull made direct contact with the concrete.
Both Collin and Liam were life-flighted to UAB Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
Collin’s Injuries
• Open tibia/fibula fracture in his right leg
• Temporal bone fracture near his right ear
• Skull fracture requiring an emergency craniotomy
• Brain laceration caused by the fractured skull piece
As of August 10, both boys remain hospitalized. Liam is recovering from a broken leg and severe knee ligament damage. Collin has made remarkable progress, and we are hopeful for a full recovery—but it will take time, and a lot more of Collin “working his (tail) off.”
Why We’re Asking for Help
At first, Collin’s mom did NOT want a GoFundMe. In fact, she was adamantly against it. Her complete focus has been entirely on Collin’s immediate needs, barely leaving his bedside in UAB’s Neuro ICU unit. But following countless friends encouraging her to reconsider based on what his long-term needs will be, I’ve created this fund to support Collin as he rebuilds his life. Please know that if you choose to donate, it will go directly to Collin to help him establish his life, which was too close to being cut short due to this tragic accident.
Your thoughtful donation will help cover:
• College expenses
• Focused rehabilitation
• Transportation to therapy
• Any other needs of Collin’s as he finds his new normal
Collin also hopes to one day start a foundation to help other traumatic brain injury patients.
How You Can Help
“If you choose to donate, please know that every dollar will go directly to Collin and his recovery. We came so close to losing him, and now we’re committed to helping him reclaim his future.
Thank you for your support, prayers, and love.
— A. Long”
