Needed- Kindness of Strangers- Help Bob Butler Walk Again: Support for His Journey to Independence

This is for my brother Bob, a great guy who needs the kindness of strangers right now.

He is at his apartment unable to walk or get out of bed, but has officially run out of his retirement savings to pay for his home health care.

He is signed up for the VA Hospital in Hampton but we cannot get him to see a primary until November. They offered for us to take hime to the emergency room but I can't get him there as they won't come and get him.

He needs professional help Please do what you can and spread the message!

Meet Bob

My brother, Bob Butler, is facing one of the toughest battles of his life. At 71 years old, Bobby, a Vietnam War era veteran, (Bob was in the United States Navy and served on the USS Simone Lake and the USS Canopus. Both of these ships were sub tenders and he served in Holy Loch, Scotland, Rota, Spain, Charleston, and San Diego.)

He never married, has no children of his own and spent his life caring for our elderly parents and cheering me on since we were kids.

The Health Battle

3 years ago Bob developed venous insufficiency. He lost all of his skin below his knees on both legs. He started wound care and was on the road to recovery and then Bob suffered a fall that fractured his hip. He is now bed ridden and homebound and unable to walk. We found doctors, nurses, rehab professional who come to his apartment.

His legs are still in horrible shape, but he was finally getting proper physical therapy to build up his strength to get out of bed, transfer to a wheel chair, and then hopefully a walker.

Bob always has a can do attitude which helped us meeting this amazing wound care doctor. With Doctor A guiding Bob along, he is undergoing skin graft procedures to re-grow the skin on his legs. (He had suffered 3 years of wound care treatment and no one would try and get the skin graft procedure approved) This is a long, difficult road, but it holds the promise of recovery and the chance for him to regain independence. He dreams of walking again, getting out of bed, and being able to live life on his terms.

The journey to recovery requires 24/7 home healthcare to assist with his daily needs, as well as specialized physical therapy to help him regain his strength. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover home health care, and Bobby has exhausted most of his retirement funds to pay for his care. Without these funds, he faces the difficult prospect of delayed recovery or worse.

UPDATE: 9/11/2025 Bob is starting to sit up daily, He is gaining his strength to be able to lift himself out of his hospital bed to a walker. He is not there yet...but every day is improving!

UPDATE: 9/22/2025 Bobby had to go to the emergency room as his legs are bleeding so much he lost lots of blood. They filled him up and he is back in his apartment.
