Aid Abel: Support His Childhood Leukemia Battle

Hi, my name is Abel and I am 9 years old. I love to build Legos, and read Calvin and Hobbes books but I am constantly interrupted by my younger brother and sister. Some things that are fun for me are going to the beach and working on RC cars with Dad, even though Mom is always trying to get me to stay home and practice piano.

In March my parents noticed that I was napping more after school and this was very strange for me. I am a 3rd grader at IPCS in Kailua-Kona. I love to be creative at school and am normally very full of energy. We went to the doctors and they did blood work and found out I had Mononucleosis. For a couple of weeks I was home from school and just wasn't getting better. Mom and Dad took me to the doctor again. I was sent to the Kona ER where they took more blood cultures and Xrays. And before I knew it I was in a plane on the way to the Kapiolani Hospital on Oahu. And just so you know it was sadly NOT a helicopter.

The next day my Mom and Dad were told that I have AML. AML is Acute Myeloid Leukemia. That afternoon they did a bone marrow biopsy and I started my chemotherapy treatments the next day.

This is going to be a long battle. For the next several months I will be at the hospital which is on a different island from my home. Right now I can Facetime my family but only Mom and Dad get to be in my room with me. Even though my little sister and brother drive me crazy, I sure miss them right now.

When they did the biopsy they found that the cancer is also in my bone marrow. I will have to make a trip to the mainland for a bone marrow transplant. I have to have several chemo treatments before they can take care of the bone marrow mutation.

With Mom and Dad splitting their time between home and the hospital it will be very challenging for all of us. It costs a lot of money. Flights, food, transportation, accommodation, medical bills, etc. And maybe some fun Lego sets too, while I am stuck in the hospital.

Please support my family as we go through this battle against cancer. This is not going to be a quick sprint but more like

a marathon.
