My Fight Against Multiple Sclerosis

Please Help Me Transform My Life Again!

My name is Jackie, I am a mother of one who lives near Guildford in Surrey, UK. I have been living with multiple sclerosis (MS) for over 22 years.

I was incredibly grateful and moved by our last fundraising campaign, which enabled me to finally get the mobility I needed around the house in my indoor motorised chair. Since receiving this chair, my life indoors has been transformed. I have some degree of independence back in the house, but most of all I have been able to finally enjoy my garden and sit out in the wonderful summer sun. This year it has been especially beneficial with the COVID restrictions.

Before I became ill, I worked as a gardener and as a furniture upholsterer. When I was bringing up my daughter, Emma, as a single mother I also became a classroom assistant in order to be around during school holidays. Gardening was definitely my first love!

22 years ago I was diagnosed with an incurable, slow, progressive form of MS. This disease has severely affected the mobility and strength in my legs, arms and hands and slowly changed my life and my level of independence.

Unfortunately over the last three years, my illness has progressed to another stage and now I am unable to transfer from my wheelchair into the passenger seat of a car. This progression has left me in a situation where I cannot leave the house without specialised transport as my motorised chair is not designed for rugged terrain. Without transport, I cannot attend my weekly therapy at the MS centre which is crucial to me retaining some movement; but also it has become extremely difficult to attend any kind of social event outside of my home.

There is hope though …

A fellow village resident came forward and very generously allowed me to borrow his converted wheelchair accessible car.  A wheelchair can be driven into the rear of the car through to be next to the driver resulting in no transfers at all. Even better, the car comes with an electric outdoor wheelchair.

He now wants to sell it. Normally this kind of vehicle is extremely expensive, but due to the kindness of the owner, he is selling it at a very reasonable price. However, it is still completely outside the range of affordability for me and so I am doing everything to collect money together in order to keep this wonderful vehicle.

The car itself costs £15,000 to purchase and insure (this includes the wheelchair worth £4,000) - so you see I cannot pass on this opportunity! I have already had a generous donation from a friend, so I am desperately trying to raise the remaining £7,000 to be able to finally pay the kind owner who has been lending it to me for a while now.

Any funds given will go directly into the purchase of the car with the wheelchair for myself. If we are lucky enough to go over our target, all funds will go into other projects to improve my quality of life such as home automation.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

NOTE: I (Chris Cheshire) will be withdrawing the funds from this account on Jackie's behalf and transferring them to her as they come in.
