Hi my name is Ceridwen and I am mum and full time carer for my daughter Shannon. I am creating this fundraiser because Shannon urgently needs access to specialist Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) rehabilitation - care that could help her regain independence, mobility and stability that this condition has taken away.
Shannon's Journey
Shannon is a bright young woman whose daily life has changed dramatically due to FND, she experiences :
- Severe mobility difficulties
- Tremors and shaking 24 hrs a day
- Vocal Tremors
- Frequent loss of voice
- Non epilepsy seizures
- Chronic pain
- Chronic Fatigue
- Sleep deprivation
- Breathing difficulties/swallowing
- Vision
- Incontinence
- Loss of independence in daily activities
These symptoms impact every single part of her day. - from communicating, moving safely, eating, socialising and even being able to enjoy moments of normal life. Her world has become smaller, our lives centred around managing unpredictable and frightening symptoms.
NHS Barriers and the Need for Private Care
After many hospital visits to our Leicester General Hospital, the neurology department, we have been told Shannon will need specialist and intense inpatient rehabilitation to help her recover.
The referral has been made to ST Georges, London who has inpatient rehab however, they are not taking new patients and if they were to accept her she would have to wait two to four years for the rehab. St George's is one of the few specialist centres in the UK.
This has left us in a impossible situation. Shannon needs a structured multidisciplinary rehab - Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology and neuro support.
We are now going to have to seek private specialist FND rehabilitation, but the costs are extremely high, as a carer for 21 years, I simply cannot fund this alone, however I am prepared to campaign for the lack of provisions available.
This fundraising matters: to give Shannon a chance to :
Regain her mobility
Reduce or improve tremors and attacks
Communicate more easily
Rebuild her confidence
Get back a sense of independence
Improve both of our quality of life.
Rehab provides people with tools, strength and strategies to get their lives back - and Shannon deserves this chance. The funds will be used for Shannon
Neurologist who has experience in FND's
Neuro physiotherapy
Neuro psychotherapy
Costs of hospital visits, including scans etc. Transport to and from hospital. Hotel stays or Air Bnb stays if need to travel to far
Electric Wheelchair
Ongoing Therapy to maintain any progress.
How you Can Help?
If you are able to donate - even the smallest amount - it will bring us one step closer to giving Shannon the treatment she needs and deserves.
If you can not donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser. Awareness is powerful .
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, for supporting Shannon, and helping us hold onto hope.
