Support Ahmed: Building a future beyond trauma

Hello, my name is Susanne, and I live in London, UK. On April 22, 2024, a serendipitous encounter on a train in Germany introduced me to Ahmed, a young man whose future hung by a thread as he headed to an asylum reception centre in Nürnberg, where he still remains to this day.

As a mother, with a daughter just a little older than Ahmed, this thought did not stop going through my mind: what would I wish for her if she were facing such an uncertain, terrifying future, all alone? He had only just turned 20 when we met! Witnessing his quiet dignity and resilient spirit, even in desperate circumstances, ignited an unwavering conviction within me to help Ahmed reclaim the future he so clearly deserved.

Since then, we've been in daily contact. We've become a team, fighting tirelessly for his legal, educational and critical health future.

Ahmed's Story: Resilience forged in adversity
Ahmed's journey began with dreams, as a university student in Gaza, before war cruelley shattered his life. He witnessed unspeakable horrors and endured immense personal loss – experiences no one should ever have to face. After fleeing Gaza, he survived brutal conditions in Turkey and Greece, eventually reaching Germany and navigating this new, daunting life entirely on his own.

Despite unimaginable loss and hardship, Ahmed is truly remarkable. He's intelligent, driven by a fierce determination to learn and achieve his dreams, and possesses a kindness, generosity, and resilience that never ceases to astound me .

He dreams of rebuilding his life, continuing his education, and ultimately, giving back to society. With the right support, I truly believe he has the potential to build a successful and fulfilling future in Germany.

However, his journey has left him with profound invisible wounds. Expert psychiatric reports confirm that the trauma he has endured puts his mental and emotional well-being at severe risk, and without holistic, culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care, it will continue to interfere significantly with his daily life. A stable and supportive environment, coupled with this specialised mental health support, is crucial for his recovery.

His Current Reality: Undignified conditions & urgent needs
Right now, Ahmed is trapped in a state-run asylum reception centre, living in undignified and degrading conditions. This environment is actively worsening his trauma and threatening his life.
  • It's filthy, infested with bedbugs and strictly controlled with no visitor access – a truly toxic environment for anyone, let alone someone grappling with severe trauma.
  • He will not even take his prescribed medication because he fears falling into a deep sleep in an unsafe, shared room. He once confided in me, "I just want to sleep without fear." That simple, heartbreaking wish underscores the profound impact of his current living situation.

Beyond his mental health, Ahmed also suffers from severe physical ailments:
  • Chronic kidney issues: Requiring ongoing urological care and surgeries.
  • Severe stomach problems: Requiring a special diet that is simply not affordable on his asylum allowance.
  • Shoulder dislocation & nasal bone fracture: Both requiring surgical intervention.

The Urgent Threat: Why your help is critical NOW
Ahmed is currently fighting deportation back to Greece. This isn't just a legal battle; it's a fight for his life and his mental well-being.

Psychiatric experts explicitly state that a return to Greece would lead to a significant deterioration of his health and an acute risk to his life. Securing his legal status is the foundational step for any long-term healing. Expert opinion highlights that ongoing, consistent support, including mental health care, is a critical protective factor for him.

I've now exhausted my personal funds supporting Ahmed, and this crowdfunding campaign is vital to continue his fight for asylum and provide him with the tools and environment he needs to rebuild his life.

Without this support, his deportation is a very real threat and his health will continue to deteriorate, potentially leading to tragic consequences.

How Your Donation Transforms Lives: Our goal & impact
This £20,000 (approx. €23,500) is a critical first step, a lifeline, to cover his most urgent legal, medical, and educational needs. It will give Ahmed a fighting chance to stay in Germany and build the stable, dignified future he so deserves.

Your donation will directly fund:
  • Legal Aid (£6,000 / approx. €7,000): To secure his right to safety and prevent deportation.
  • Expert reports & official translations (£1,750 / approx. €2,100): For crucial psychiatric, medical, and all official assessments vital to his legal case.
  • Private trauma-informed & culturally sensitive therapy (£3,000 / approx. €3,500): To access the urgent, specialised therapy he needs. This funding provides the crucial start of long-term support not accessible through public services.
  • Special dietary needs (£1,000 / approx. €1,170): Medically necessary food to support his recovery and manage his conditions.
  • Language courses (£3,000 / approx. €3,500): To complete B2 and C1 levels, building on his B1 foundation, significantly strengthening his residency potential and paving his way to integration.
  • Essential tools for learning (£1,100 / approx. €1,300): A computer, materials for his studies and connecting with support services.
  • Essential living & support costs (£1,500 / approx. €1,755): To cover basic necessities like clothes, internet/wifi connection, phone access, local travel etc.
  • Creating a safe haven (£2,650 / approx. €3,100): To establish a stable, safe living environment, allowing him to move out of the state-run reception centre into specialist accommodation that is hard to come by.

Your Support: A lifeline, a future.
Your contribution directly offers Ahmed:
  • Legal security: A fighting chance to prevent deportation and gain safety.
  • Healing: Access to vital, holistic trauma-informed therapy, medical care, and a proper diet to mend his body and mind, forming the bedrock of his stability.
  • Education: The foundation for integration, employment and a fulfilling life.
  • Dignity: A path out of undignified living conditions and towards a stable, safe and independent future.

Every donation, no matter the size, is a lifeline for Ahmed. Please join us in giving this wonderful resilient young man the chance to build the future he deserves.

Thank you for your generosity and support.

Susanne
