Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and leafy greens grown in Greenland – instead of being flown thousands of kilometres by air.
This is Agroprojekt Ilua.
Agroprojekt Ilua is a real Arctic greenhouse project located in Narsarsuaq, South Greenland. The goal is to build and operate a working 100 m² greenhouse prototype and document whether reliable local food production is technically and economically possible under Arctic conditions.
This is not a vision or a demonstration project. It is a physical installation, designed to be built, used and tested in real operation.
Today, almost all fresh vegetables in South Greenland are imported by air. This results in high prices, fragile supply chains and inconsistent quality. Local production cannot replace imports overnight, but it can improve food security, stability and practical knowledge.
Narsarsuaq is one of the most suitable locations in Greenland for this type of project, with a relatively mild inland climate, long summer daylight, no permafrost on the plain and existing agricultural experience.
Phase 1 consists of a modular Arctic greenhouse with:
- south-facing polycarbonate roof
- insulated north wall
- passive solar gain
- thermal energy storage
- full-spectrum LED
- hydroponic production
The fundraising goal is 500,000 DKK, allocated transparently:
- 250,000 DKK – construction and technical systems
- 150,000 DKK – operation and buffer (year 1)
- 100,000 DKK – logistics and contingencies
No salaries are paid from donations during construction.
Success is simple: one greenhouse, operating reliably, producing food, and generating real data for the next step.
