Afya International's mission is to empower women in their pursuit of higher education, employment, and personal freedom by providing affordable and effective menstrual hygiene solutions. The solution is a medical grade silicone menstrual cup. This cup eliminates the risk of infections such as TSS, is economical and can be reused for many years, is easier to use than traditional products, and is environmentally friendly.
Afya has been granted a wonderful opportunity to start a pilot program the first week of August where the product will be evaluated in both urban and rural settings in Mozambique. One thousand cups will be distributed through two different secondary schools, and for the purpose of the study the girls will receive one for free. Data will be collected via trusted local women being paid a stipend, and will be compiled and presented to the Minister of Health and others in November. Afya needs financial support in order to purchase 1000 menstrual cups for the study and to help pay for the stipends for those collecting data. A similar pilot program is aimed to be replicated in Uganda in November, and financial support is greatly needed! This study will help Afya refine and solidify their product to be the best possible by evaluating usability and quality, begin to set up frameworks for an educational program, and begin to spread the message that menstruation matters and should be addressed.
Afya International's costs include
$2250 for the manufacturing of the 1000 menstrual cups, packaging and their shipment to Mozambique.
$320 to pay our data collectors in Mozambique stipends.
$3000 for this to be replicated in Uganda.
$5,000 is far from covering all of Afya's expenses, but would help tremendously in being able to start this business that will empower women and give them control over their menstruation. You can find us on Facebook @afyaint
