Aftermath of Kherson Floods

We at the Post House Coffee Shop Kinsale, are launching a fundraiser having merely glimpsed the impact of the devastation caused by the Kherson floods on the lives of so many people.
Our Pastry Chef / Head Barista, Valeriia, hails from Kherson, and relocated to Ireland amidst the ongoing war in the Ukraine. Despite the awful circumstances that brought Valeriia to our cafe, we are immensely grateful for her wonderful talent and positive presence.
On the 6th June 2023, we found out that a dam was destroyed by Russian forces outside of the town of Kherson. This caused catastrophic floods, over 150 deaths, homelessness for thousands (more) Ukrainian individuals, severe environmental damage, and has had a disastrous impact on the livelihoods of Kherson natives. This has been referred to as one of the biggest human-caused disasters of our time. Drought, pollution, and unusable agricultural lands continue to exacerbate the ongoing impact.
Much of Valeriia’s family continued to live in Kherson at the time of the floods, including her grandparents while her father also remains in the country. The family home was submerged in water (Video link attached) and is now uninhabitable. We cannot fathom the impact this must have on Valeriia and other affected families who are already dealing with the impact of the war and separation from loved ones.
We are running this fundraiser to assist Valeriia's family in rebuilding their home.
Valeriia is naturally concerned about the welfare of pets, and animals inhabiting local rescue centres which were obliterated by the floods. As such, a portion of the funds will be committed to Shans shelter Kherson, a local rescue providing emergency relief to surviving animals in the region.
All donations will be gratefully received.
