Aftercare Jail Support -- updated

Update August 6, 2020

Thanks to everyone who has donated to this campaign, we have been able to continue to expand our capacity and our aftercare for folks getting out of Allegheny County Jail. Jail Break has been and will continue using funds raised here to directly support activists, organizers and BLM protest-related bail outs, as warrants issues and arrests continue to arise and target folks with false charges.

Jail Break is also continuing to use funds to provide commissary, bail, transportation, food, water, basic necessities, and other resources to folks coming out of, or who are in other ways directly impacted by, ACJ.

Jail Break is hoping to begin supporting folks with hefty & absurd court fines. In some cases folks are unable to get off probation until they have paid court fines. As we continue to raise funds for direct jail support and aftercare, we're asking the community to help us continue to raise money to cover as many fines like these as possible.

Jail Break thanks everyone who has already donated to this campaign for helping us towards our goal of increasing aftercare for impacted by incarceration and ACJ. Please continue to share this campaign widely. Donations of any amount are impactful.

Update July 7, 2020

Jail Break is an autonomous coalition of activists, social workers, community members and groups providing aftercare resources (food, clothing, transportation) for folks getting out of Allegheny County Jail.  The COVID-19 crisis and the resurgence of the BLM movement has resulted in an increase in donations for Jail Break. We are committed to being transparent about where exactly your donations are going.

With more donations and more members, we have been able to expand our capacity. We are continuing to do direct aftercare support outside of Allegheny County Jail, provide transportation for formerly incarcerated folks, and provide monetary assistance for their families. Upon request for assistance, a member of Jail Break sends money directly when people who are impacted by incarceration request it, using Venmo or Jpay.

Due to our increase in funds, we will also be making donations to groups and individuals who are working to achieve the same goals as Jail Break. We will be directly donating to their campaigns via their fundraising links and through our personal relationships with the organizers. As we move forward with these donations, we are determined to be accountable to the people who have donated to this campaign. We will keep the public updated via our twitter @jailbreakpgh.

Thank you for your patience.

A coalition of individuals and groups from around Pittsburgh are mobilizing to create a network of people providing aftercare resources for folks getting out of Allegheny County Jail. Evidently, people are frequently released from jail in uncomfortable and unsafe conditions: in cold weather without proper clothing or shoes, without bus fare, without phone calls to friends or family, and in plenty of other circumstances that make reentry challenging.

Since the jail is not providing adequate care or responding to the needs of folks being released, we, as a community, are responding by attempting to set up a table outside of the jail as often as possible to provide material support. In order to give the best quality care to the most people, we need your help!

All funds will go directly to buying needed supplies for people being released from ACJ.
