Hi everyone,
My name is Martin, and for most of my adult life I chose work that mattered to me emotionally — not work that made me wealthy.
For years, I worked in homeless outreach and supportive housing programs in New York City and Philadelphia, helping people struggling with homelessness, addiction, mental illness, trauma, and extreme poverty. I spent my career working with vulnerable people because I genuinely believed that everyone deserves dignity, patience, and someone willing to stand beside them when life falls apart.
I don’t regret those choices. But the reality is that dedicating your life to helping others often comes with a financial cost.
Instead of building savings or pursuing high-paying corporate careers, I poured my energy into difficult frontline social work. I worked long hours in emotionally intense environments because I believed it mattered.
A little over a year ago, I moved to Germany to rebuild my life and reconnect with my roots. I came here believing my years of experience and dedication would help me establish stability quickly. Instead, I encountered major bureaucratic barriers surrounding professional recognition and employment qualifications.
Despite years of leadership experience in social services, I’ve repeatedly had to start from the bottom, fight to prove my value, and survive periods of financial uncertainty while trying to establish myself in a new system and country.
Over the past year, I’ve continued pushing forward:
* applying for jobs across Germany,
* attending interviews and trial workdays,
* working toward official recognition of my qualifications,
* studying for my German driver’s license conversion,
* and trying to create a stable future from scratch.
I’m proud that I never chose the easy path in life. But after spending years helping carry other people’s burdens, I now find myself in a position where I could genuinely use some support myself.
This fundraiser would help me:
* maintain housing stability,
* cover transportation and administrative costs,
* continue pursuing professional recognition in Germany,
* and rebuild enough financial security to fully get back on my feet.
I am not looking for luxury or pity. I’m simply trying to stabilize my life after dedicating years to helping people who society often overlooks.
If you’re able to contribute, even a small amount would mean a great deal to me. And if you cannot donate, sharing this quietly or privately is deeply appreciated as well.
I still believe in compassion, community, and helping people through difficult chapters in life. Right now, I’m simply hoping for a little of that same compassion in return.
Thank you for reading.
— Martin
