Hi, my name is Sarah Ruhe a 34 year old Wife and Mother; on August 18th, 2023, I was diagnosed with T Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Initially misdiagnosed with anemia, I was fortunate to be transferred to South Saint Davids hospital in Austin, where I met Dr. Diaa Osman, Oncologist. He informed me of the urgent need for treatment, giving me just 2 weeks to live without immediate intervention. With a husband, Randy, and a 9-year-old son, Preston, at home, I didn't hesitate to start the rigorous treatment plan.
The first round of procedures and chemotherapy involved a bone marrow biopsy, revealing my bone marrow was 100% impacted with cancer cells. Dr. Osman's intensive treatments, a combination of pills, fluids, and various chemotherapies over 2 weeks, were successful. The second bone marrow biopsy showed complete remission by the third week.
Despite the victory, subsequent rounds of chemotherapy and six lumbar punctures followed, each hospital stay lasting a week. Fortunately, all lumbar punctures returned clear results. Now, in remission and handling treatments well, I am eligible for a Bone Marrow Transplant, scheduled for January 12th, 2024.
However, the post-transplant process demands Letermovir, a crucial medication costing $4,000 a month, not covered by insurance and unavailable at the hospital. It is VITAL that I take this medication for 100 days post transplant. This medicine prevents Cytomegalovirus, a deadly virus attacking organs.
My husband, Randy, has been working tirelessly to cover bills during my treatments, but my ability to work has been limited. Even with a recent return to part-time work from home, a major pay cut and an average of 20 hours a week remain my reality. Post-transplant, a recovery period, and a fourth round of chemotherapy for three days will further limit my ability to work.
While we hesitate to ask for help, this situation is life-threatening, and any contribution towards this medication would be immensely appreciated. Confident in my medical team, I look forward to embracing my second chance at life to the fullest. Your support means the world to me, Randy, and Preston.
