Hi, my name is Destinie, and I’m trying to raise funds for my grandfather, Jorge.

My grandfather is 82 years old and still out there working every single day. He drives for Uber, not because he wants to stay busy, but because he has to. After a lifetime of working and providing for his family, he should be resting. Instead, he’s fighting one of the hardest battles of his life.

He was recently diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer and is currently going through radiation and chemotherapy. The treatments alone are overwhelming, but the financial burden has made it even harder. Even with insurance, he is responsible for 20 percent of his medical costs. This includes radiation 5 days a week, chemotherapy, nutritional infusions, oncologist appointments, medications, and more. It’s more than he should have to carry at any point, but especially right now.

My grandfather first came to this country from Guatemala when he was just 18 years old. He worked tirelessly, going back and forth to support our family, and eventually made it possible for everyone to come and build a life here. Everything we have is because of his sacrifices. He has always put his family first, no matter what.

Now it’s our turn to try to show up for him.

We are raising money to help cover his medical expenses and, more importantly, to give him the chance to finally rest. He deserves to focus on his health without the stress of how he’s going to pay for treatment or how he’s going to sustain himself after treatment has ended.

Tiene 82 años y todavía trabaja todos los días, conduciendo para Uber, no porque quiera, sino porque tiene que hacerlo. Después de toda una vida brindando para su familia, debería poder descansar. En cambio, está enfrentando una de las batallas más difíciles de su vida.

Recientemente le diagnosticaron cáncer de esófago en etapa 3 y está recibiendo radioterapia y quimioterapia. Incluso con seguro, él es responsable del 20 por ciento de los costos médicos. Esto incluye radioterapia, quimioterapia, infusiones nutricionales, citas médicas, medicamentos y más. Es una carga pesada a cualquier edad, pero especialmente ahora.

Él llegó a este país desde Guatemala cuando tenía solo 18 años y pasó toda su vida trabajando para mantener a su familia. Gracias a sus sacrificios, ayudó a que toda nuestra familia pudiera construir una vida aquí. Siempre nos ha puesto primero.
