Update 5, May 11, 2026: Just saying, if everybody who saw this little video from last August dropped $10 in our GoFundMe
that "nice old guy at Tsunami" would cry like a baby.

Update 4 on Buying the Property, May 10;
$26,000+ raised this first official week.
Deep thanks to Kara Eubanks and Nathalie Fortine for a
magnificent Mother's Day violin recital at the Bookstore.
On GofundMe we had 19 donations today,
and $655 into "The Tip Box."
7 days into GoFundMe we just passed 100 donations,
including 21 in "The $10 Movement."
A lot of little donations this week would be fine.
2100 people have viewed it, 45 have shared it.
Lookout Eugene has an article coming out later this week.
We are close to having a fun little film ready.

Update 3, May 9, 2026, On the Buying of the Property:
Wow, what an exciting time it is! We're getting so much positive support from the folks coming through the store. Over $2600 came through "The Tip Box" in the last 24 hours, plus over 25 GoFundMe donations. People are getting a feel for "The $10 Movement." Four of us worker-owners have now dropped into our GoFundMe Campaign. Between GoFundMe and Tips we're well over $25,000 after less than a week. Shares are growing, views leaped by 30% in just this last day. KLCC, our local NPR station, had a short feature on this Movement. The local on-line Newspaper was here for three hours yesterday. We have so much to share. We'll get to it, a little every day. And if you would please share, too, the right things are going to happen. Thanks! Scott, Tsunami

Second update, May 8, 2026: Please Share this around:-
Update on the Purchase of the Property.
Hey Folks, Couple-three things: Click on the link to watch a song by Willy Porter made up from audience prompts on the Tsunami Stage Wednesday night entitled "I Hope We Can Buy the Building."
Enjoy!
Thank you , Willy. You and Mai Bloomfield gave the 80 of us here the something we deeply needed.
Between GoFundMe and our "Tip Box" at the store, we've now raised $25,000 in the first six official days of our Campaign. We're over 300 donations. Workers in the store are now adding money to the funds. Scott, prez and gm, committed to $10 per day into GoFundMe until we buy the building. He can probably afford $20 per day, but definitely not $30. We love the idea of $10 donations. Enough people in one direction and you've got a Movement. And we need our Movements, now more than ever. (more on this later)
Btw, there was also a check for $2000 here today. Thank you so kindly.
Last night we had 125 people here for a Beatles Singalong, focusing on Paul's songs.
We're starting daily updates. We'll try to give you good reason to come bak for more. Exciting times here at the Bookstore

First Update, May 6, 2026:
Update on the Purchase of the Property:
3+ days in, $20,000 total raised. 57 donors through GoFundMe, $15,300 raised through the "Tip Box."
From now on, all money raised in any way other than GoFundMe will go into our saving account at Oregon Community Credit Union. Fundraisers are coming together, checks are appearing in the mail, folks are tipping with credit cards and cash. We'll keep everybody updated about all money raised.
A number of good people have suggested that the "Tip Box" money should not go into GoFundMe, per se, but rather, to set it aside in a separate, interest-bearing account. We agree in theory, but did put the first $12,400 raised through the "Tip Box" into our GoFundMe. It was a proper way to prime the pump, to jumpstart the campaign--to kick-start it. Since then we have raised another $2700, which we have deposited in OCCU.
One thing: for a six-pack of Bookstore Clerks, all of whom are busy with our daily store tasks and services, to raise a $1,000,000 in our spare moments, is a challenge, one we are whole-heartedly accepting and figuring out as we go.
Thank you for your patience and support!
Scott

After 30 years of paying rent (presently $8400 per month) at the same location in Beautiful South Eugene, it's time for Tsunami Books to own the property. As none of the six of us who work here have more than very modest savings, or even own (or are buying) homes, we are happy for the opportunity to work with you and Gofundme to get the word out to lovers of Bookstores everywhere to help us with this project.
We are dedicating our efforts to the Shajarah Tayyebeh (Sacred Tree) girls' elementary school, bombed in Iran on the first day of the war. It affected us deeply the day it occurred, and has ever since. We apologize with our whole hearts for this American misdeed. Tsunami Books feels the need to act. By purchasing the building, with your help— to keep Tsunami alive for books, for music, for local arts and crafts, and for the Community, by legally binding covenant in perpetuity— is what we can do for now.
We have set our initial GoFundMe goal at $200,000. Once we begin to approach $100,000, and if at that time we think it impossible to raise it all through crowdfunding, we will start to consider amenable members of a friendly little llc. We will utilize the best legal help we know to set this up to everyone's ease and benefit. It would be ideal to have it in place this year. It will take approximately $1,000,000 to make this happen. $10 each from 100,000 lovers of bookstores will do it. Please share this widely.
Tsunami Books is a working class Bookstore featuring used, new and remaindered books for the progressive mind. We are a neighborhood shareholder and worker-owner corporation, motivated by sustainability and the Community we serve. Of the 6 of us who presently work here, 3 of us are worker-owners. Two former worker-owners are shareholders. As it stands, two more of the people who work here will be offered worker-ownership beginning January 1, 2027.
As well as being a turnkey business open 363 days per year, we have hosted well over 5000 Community activities and events, including hundreds of author and public readings; over 1500 acoustic music productions, both locally-based and from around the world (Billy Strings, Rainbow Girls, George Winston, Jane Siberry, Holly Near, Mary Gauthier, Peter Rowan, Kevin Burke, Karan Casey, Ensemble Sangineto, Mitsuki Dasai, Ruth Moody, Andrei Andreyev...); numerous small theater productions; over 80 poetry slams; countless children's events; over 2000 science fiction, poetry and fiction writer's workshops; open services for various spiritual faiths; numerous wakes; 2 weddings; political campaigns; instrumental in the saving of Civic Stadium and the Amazon Creek headwaters; on and on. We also have started a small publishing enterprise on site, Tsunami Press.
Beginning in 1995, Tsunami was built by worker-owners and contractor-friends almost wholly from reclaimed materials. The building is a cement-block and wood-truss building on a concrete pad built in 1949 that we spent our time and money (originally $500 and a $35,000 loan at 28%) saving. It now has a 7 year old , insulated roof. Gymnasium bleachers salvaged from over 35 schools around Oregon and Washington have been repurposed into our bookshelves, stage, and tables.
Over the past 30 years we have paid over $1,500,000 in rent, always on time. These days Tsunami is often referred to as "an iconic Bookstore and venue. An Institution." It's time for Tsunami Books to be able to afford healthcare, viable long-term employment, and a solid base from which to better serve you. By owning the building we will make many of these dreams a reality. We humbly ask for your help.
Caveats: We have also decided to not withdraw any money out of our Gofundme account unless it looks like we are going to put together the million or so dollars it could take to make this happen. If at some point it becomes clear that we aren't going to raise the money, Gofundme offers the option to refund every dollar. And we will take that option.
Thank you very much
