Subject: Volunteer Placement at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre
My name is Kiah Williams, I am currently in my final year as an Equine Veterinary Nurse at Hartpury University. As part of my degree programme, I am required to volunteer in an environment that promotes animal welfare while allowing me to apply my clinical skills.
I have chosen to work with the team at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi, Africa, an internationally recognised sanctuary committed to providing critical care for injured, orphaned, and trafficked wildlife.
Throughout my placement, I will be involved in various essential activities, including anaesthesia monitoring, perioperative nursing for wildlife undergoing surgery or treatment, wound management, and intensive care. Additionally, I will participate in the rehabilitation, feeding, enrichment, hand-rearing, and tagging of orphaned animals. I will be collaborating with experienced veterinary professionals to deliver ethical, evidence-based care in a resource-limited setting, thereby making a meaningful contribution to wildlife conservation.
To facilitate this opportunity, I am currently fundraising to cover necessary expenses, including volunteer fees, vaccinations, and other related costs. Any money left over will be donated to the sanctuary.
After the trip, I will make a video of all my experiences and share it! As well as being examined on the video for my university module.
I appreciate your consideration and support. I will provide updates throughout my placement to illustrate the impact of your contributions on wildlife welfare.
