Double House Arts Collective Program Launch
Donation protected
In reaction to the unfortunate closing of a beloved Portland, Maine art program that supported artists with disabilities for over a decade, a small group is working to raise funds to kick off something new and exciting for some of the prolific art-makers who lost their space to create.
Your contribution will help us cover start-up costs (listed below) for the entire first year while we continue to build a solid and sustainable program. Please take the time to read our vision and support us if you can. Any amount is appreciated! We also need your help spreading the word, so feel free to share this.
Our Vision
The Double House Arts Collective is an inclusive, weekly open studio art session for focused, community-minded artists who thrive in a collaborative artistic environment. Jokes, music, food, and artistic support will accompany art-making time. This makers' session/arts collective welcomes artists with and without disabilities to create together and build community. We will have an accessible process for those who would like to join.
All of the artists who are members of the collective will have an equal voice in the direction of the art session time, unique workshops offered, and art show event planning. We will also provide the opportunity for two paid leadership positions in the group to disabled artist members.
This inclusive arts collective will provide an option different from a community support/day program model. We are working on creating something organic and new. In this new model, we hope to foster an environment in which disabled and non-disabled artists enter into the Disability Arts movement and local arts scene and community as creative partners.
What Your Contribution Will Go Toward:
- Paid leadership positions for artists with disabilities
- Two paid on-site coordinators per session
- Operational expenses
- Art supplies and exhibition planning
- Workshops with local artists and makers, including a program with Chef Louis of Black Betty's Bistro (which was in place before the original program closed).
