Welcome a refugee family who fled Afghanistan and arrived in Northern California just before the “ban”.
Dear friends,
Together, we can help transition a new neighbor to our community -- a special family from Afghanistan.
Meet the Khels*. They are a family who just arrived in the Bay Area with a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV). This visa was granted to them as they were officially recognized for providing faithful and valuable service to the U.S. government, and, as a consequence of such service, they were experiencing an ongoing, serious threat.
The Khels arrived here with only a few suitcases, leaving everyone and everything behind in order to seek safety for their family. Despite all that they have gone through, they are grateful to be given a chance to start again in the United States.
The Khels are being resettled by a local charity, which provides them with 1 month’s rent allowance toward housing.
Now, they must find an apartment, employment, learn English, enroll their children in school, and navigate a completely foreign culture. Eventually, they will even have to pay back to the US government the cost of their flights to get them here.
Imagine, after working for the U.S. Government in Afghanistan, coming to the Bay Area with:
-3 children, under the age of 8;
-minimal to no English;
-jobless; and
-no credit history.
But in the direct and optimistic words of the Khel’s 7-year old son; "I don’t have to worry about suicide bombers outside my door any more".
This is the door to the Khel family home in Afghanistan.
Our world changes by one act of kindness at a time, one person at a time. If you are moved to help the Khel family settle in the U.S., join us. If you have recently wanted to extend yourself as part of a welcoming American citizenry, but did not know how, join us. The goal is to raise one year’s worth of rent for the Khels so that, even without documented credit, they can secure a modest apartment, and get on with the challenges of daily life in a new world. No amount is too small if we do this together.
With the power of friendship, compassion and social media, let’s raise $25,000 to show the Khels that we are grateful to them and to welcome them to our community. Let us show the young Khel boy that, beyond his new door, there is a compassionate and welcoming world.
