Help me while I help myself take my life back.

Hello, my name is Katelyn, I am 29 years old and on a weight loss journey. I was at my highest weight ever and became broken over the number on the scale. I have been trying to receive bariatric services since 2019 with no luck of approval. Insurance will not cover no matter what route I try I never seem to have luck, three offices have canceled my appointment before me ever stepping foot in their lobby. I do not have $15,000-20,000 dollars just laying around but I do have determination. Most people I talk to and open to know but I have PCOS a hormonal disorder that cause missed or irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, infertility, and weight gain.

I have been blessed with all the above while my hair growth and acne are not as extreme as some others, I struggle with infertility for about 8 years and struggled with weight gain my whole life. With PCOS comes insulin resistance and exponential weight gain, now I am not saying this will always be the case for everyone but this plays a huge factor in mine.

In 2018 I saw a doctor that was trying to treat my symptoms I was prescribed medication to help with weight loss, fertility, and regulating my menstrual cycle. That medication was not successful and we had to stop it for mental health reasons.

Fast forward to today there are so many new studies, information, and medications that are available to patients like myself. But for me I can’t get them covered by insurance and I can’t afford $700-1,500 a month for them. I am healthy by lab results not diabetic, no high blood pressure or sugar, no high cholesterol so insurance says I don’t need it.

I argue this in fact I have multiple issues with physicality such as chronic joint and nerve pain and problems, depression and anxiety, self-hate, stamina and strength. My quality of life is what’s in question, I want to have children, I want to ride a roller coaster, I want to be able to run with the kids in my class or my niece on the playground. I want to be able to hike, mountain bike, white water rafting, I want to live my life fearlessly without being held back by the size of my body.

Instead my hope is that the size of my heart be measured with value and meaning and that my community will come along side of me as I try to change my life to make and impact on not only myself but everyone I come in contact with.

I am down 36 pounds from my own attempts but with PCOS, having weight loss surgery or a bariatric plan is vital to my weight loss, I want to achieve my goals, keep the weight off and love every minute of my life without regret.
