Aerospace Designed Face Shields

Donation protected
This is not just another 3D printed face shield; it was designed to fix key issues with current DIY shields being donated (based on feedback from dozens of nurses across several Maryland hospitals). Instead of trying to create a shield that we could make as cheaply and quickly as possible, we decided to make the best shield possible, with comfort, reusability, and nurses' feedback in mind.

Our unique design features these improvements:

What are you making with the money you're requesting?

We are providing sanitized face shield kits that include the following items:

- GoPro style elastic headgear

- 3D printed knob w/ steel screw

- 3D printed visor mount

- 2 pre-cut PETG visors (a backup clear visor to extend the lifespan)

- Lens cleaning wipes

The estimated average materials cost per kit is around $5.15. This can change with price fluctuations from now until the time of purchase, but we do our best to source from a variety of places, and even pick them up ourselves to save cost.

What do you, the donors, get out of it?

This campaign is seeking donations to be used strictly towards the manufacturing and distribution of face shield kits for healthcare professionals.

We are currently considering ideas to recognize or reward large donors:

Recognition of company or individual donor on kit instruction manual/packaging, included in each kit

The ability to pick where a select a quantity of shields are donated of the donor's choice

Who we are and what have we done?

Marc Hemling and Andrew Hong are two engineers who work in aerospace.  Together, we've designed, tested, and are manufacturing face shields using 3D printing technology. Our significant others work in the local hospital systems, and have faced challenges with sufficient or comfortable PPE.  Through them, we have used nurses' feedback to design several iterations of our face shield that address their key concerns with comfort and optical clarity.

Why are we are asking for help?

Due to the popularity that our face shields achieved during the development and trials at hospitals, we are receiving more requests than we ever imagined. In order to continue donating these to local hospitals in need, we need help purchasing the raw materials.

The need for face shields is greater than ever with recent events placing our front line medical workers in harm's way.  A face shield is a critical piece of Personal Protective Equipment designed to stop splash and projectile contaminants from harming our nurses, doctors, technicians, and medical staff. Covid 19 has drawn higher demand for these shields, and healthcare workers have to wear these sometimes for 12 hour shifts, without any replacements if they get scratched or damaged.  By contributing even just a few dollars, you can help us convert raw materials into ergonomic and reusable face shields that will help local medical systems fight Covid 19.

What if I can't donate?  What else can I do to help?

This is a link to the files available to download for those of you with 3D printers. If you want to start making and donating these yourself, we appreciate that even more than money!

Other ways to help out besides money are by donations of raw materials:

- PETG or Polycarbonate sheets (10”x12” minimum dimensions, 015”-.040” thick)

- GoPro style headbands

- Boxes or bags for packaging

- Additional printing resources

- Lens cleaning wipes

- Sanitizing wipes

- Any resources that would help our efforts

- Anything else that the heroes may appreciate receiving in their kits

- SHARING OUR PROJECT WITH OTHERS

Our limitations

If somehow our campaign goes above $4000, we would need to consider purchasing additional equipment in order to manufacture the shields in a timely manner.

If you have read to the end, THANK YOU!

We have made over 500 kits to start, but we're not stopping there.  With help to purchase materials, we can make even more!

Don’t forget to share photos of your shields at #MDFaceShields. You can also contact us on our facebook page!
