This year I swam the length of Fontana Lake to benefit TC Roberson Swimming and Diving. I started Thursday morning at Tsali Recreation Area pulling a paddle board loaded down with camping gear, food and drink(85lbs).
Made my way to the Double Island campsite in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It is a beautiful campsite only accessible by water and I had it all to myself.
On Friday morning I swam the rest of the way to Fontana Dam. A total of approx. 19 miles. The hope was to then swim Cheoah Lake and Calderwood Lake on Saturday and Sunday but the first two days took a little to much out of me. I had swum Fontana several times before with great support from family and friends but this was the first time trying to go it alone. I underestimated the effects of not having those supporters with me, the warm water(80-82degrees) and pulling that much gear behind me would have. I was not able to keep up my fluid intake well enough and by the end of day two I was dehydrated and cramping. Hamstrings, calfs, pects, biceps and feet all cramping at one time or another. I decided Cheoah and Calderwood would have to wait until another day. I was really looking forward to that 53 degree water!!! Not!
The bright side of not swimming Cheoah and Calderwood was getting to spend a fantastic weekend with my daughter Catherine and granddog River exploring the Fontan Village area.
