When French regulators blocked the project in 2019, the average EU household was paying €7 per 100 kWh. But by 2025 that number had increased to €12. This is according to official EU statistics (Eurostat). And in 2026 monthly energy bills will further increase – even more significantly (as a result of the US - Iran war and other factors). In Germany the rate has already exceeded €40 per 100 kWh.
The MidCat pipeline project has now become viable – and deserves to be implemented without further delay, as it will serve to secure energy independence for Europe and its citizens and will provide for lower costs per household (especially in Germany and Central Europe). Majority of European consumers consider it a top priority for the EU to ensure affordable energy prices.
Importantly, new technologies now enable more efficient lower-cost transmission.
French regulators want to protect their nuclear industry, but other EU nations do not deserve to suffer because of this. Current studies to confirm viability need to be conducted, as some potential support for the MidCat pipeline already exists in France – namely, the Identity and Democracy group (which includes Marine Le Pen's National Rally).
