Doug and Karin are running the London Half Marathon on Sunday 27 November to raise funds for Advance Myanmar. We are raising money for people who have fled attacks by the military and need food and shelter, for activists who need to go into hiding and for human rights organisations documenting the abuses by the Burmese military. Since the attempted military coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021, the people in Myanmar have bravely fought back against the brutal military, often paying with their lives. We are doing this fundraiser because we know what Advance Myanmar can do to help people who need it the most. Since the attempted coup, Advance Myanmar has:
- Made sure life saving aid has been delivered to hard to reach populations, including children and victims of bomb attacks by the military. We have supported them with emergency food, shelters and medicines
- Funded a new operating theatre in a bombed out hospital
- Supported Covid-19 patients with oxygen and medicines
- Helped activists hide and flee, avoiding arrest and potential torture and sexual violence in detention
- Supported journalists to keep reporting and activists to document human rights violations so they can keep telling the world what is going on
- Kept activists safe by funding secure technology, protective gear for protestors and safe communication channels
- Helped activists on the run flee Myanmar
- Funded tarpaulin for shelters for displaced people
Advance Myanmar is founded and run by a team of people with decades of experience of the humanitarian and human rights situation in Myanmar. We provide humanitarian assistance at times of crisis, but also assist local communities to promote positive change to tackle the root causes of those crises.
