Adriana Victoria Zevallos Sanchez—known to her loved ones as Adrianita—is a sweet, strong-willed little girl just 21 months old. From the moment she was born in Peru, she’s faced a storm of medical challenges that would be unimaginable for most adults—let alone a baby.

Weighing only 2.2 kg at birth, Adrianita suffered a severe brain injury during delivery that caused cerebral palsy. She had to be manually resuscitated. Doctors diagnosed her with a rare, life-threatening genetic condition—deletion of chromosome 14q32—so uncommon that no specialists in her home country could treat her.

Among her many conditions:

• Severe craniosynostosis, which affects her skull and sensory organs

• Bilateral blindness and hearing difficulties

• Hydrocephalus (requiring a brain shunt)

• Epilepsy with frequent seizures

• Heart and bone malformations

• Severe malnutrition and feeding problems

• Loss of 4 key genes, leaving her at risk of aggressive pediatric cancer and immune system failure

• Permanent physical and neurological disabilities

Doctors in Peru offered only palliative care, telling her mother she wouldn’t survive. But Gutty, Adrianita’s mother, never gave up hope. She held her baby as she faced cyanotic seizures and recurring vomiting. She witnessed the careless treatment Adrianita received, often without compassion, and suffered alongside her daughter.

“They told me there was nothing more to do… just wait for her to die.”

But Gutty refused to accept that. With immense courage, she brought Adrianita to the U.S. in search of a second chance.

✨ A Glimmer of Hope at CHOP

Now at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Adrianita is finally being treated with dignity and care. She’s being seen by specialists in:

• Neurology

• Neurosurgery

• Cardiology

• Genetics

• Oncology

• Ophthalmology

• Immunology

• Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine

For the first time, she’s being stabilized and closely monitored. Her rare condition is being studied and managed. And most importantly—she’s smiling again.

Gutty says:

“Here, the doctors treat her like a normal baby—with love. That’s helped her improve more than anything else.”

But the costs are overwhelming.
