Hi, my name is Leandro Marcos Lessin (25 years old), and I am trying to start this fundraiser for my mother, Adriana Almeida Guedes (47 years old).
Adriana lost her mom to an aggressive type of breast cancer when she was only 7 years old. My mom has had to work hard to survive all her life. She had me when she was around 22 years old. After realizing how my dad was not reliable (a man dependent on both violence and drugs), she moved to the United States when I was around 4 years old. Her entire journey focused on providing me with a better life by working and sending me whatever she could while I lived in our home country, Brazil. She sacrificed being near her son to better provide for him. After some years, she was able to get the proper documentation to bring me to the United States, and we have been living together ever since.
About 6 years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and although it had spread to her lymph nodes, her chemotherapy and radiation treatments seemed to have worked. However, in November of 2021, we found out that the cancer was back. This metastatic cancer has spread to her lungs, bones, liver, and many lymph nodes. The two different types of chemotherapy treatments that she has tried so far haven't helped stop the continuous spread of the cancer. The chemotherapy treatments were delayed due to a suspected infection, which the doctors weren't been able to pinpoint. These last 4 months have been a living hell for her. She has been hospitalized 4 times (pneumonia twice, covid once, septic once). She was in intensive care after recently leaving home in an ambulance due to continuous fevers and severe pain around her liver (stayed 11 days in the hospital). Now, she has been discharged from the hospital, and the infection seems to have gone away. We are anxiously waiting for her to be fit again to start yet a new type of chemotherapy treatment, which will hopefully work and won't put her down like the ones before. We welcome wishes and prayers of strength.
It is awful to see someone so brave go through the pain and suffering she is going through, especially when that person is your mother. I recently finished graduate school, but I can't hold a full-time position while also providing her with the time and attention she needs. Between my student loans, car payments, and simple costs of life, I can't even afford to make her comfortable around the house. My step-father is also unemployed, and money just keeps getting pumped out of our pockets while we sit here hoping they can slow the cancer before it takes over the rest of her body. Some treatment ideas are perhaps still possible, but they come with substantial financial costs, to say the least.
I have never been one to ask for monetary aid. I think we all have our battles, and even though things get hard at times, when we're strong, we can pull ourselves up from just about anything. However, it would be ignorant of me not to try to raise some money to help our situation, as we currently have no income. We welcome any donation, no matter the amount. I owe so much to this woman, and I wish I could just help her more. I haven't been able to fully enjoy her presence in the last few years due to my schooling, and now that I finally finished school, her health has deteriorated to the point where all I can do is sit next to her in a hospital bed.
I didn't get to meet my grandmother, but I am still hoping that my mom will meet my future children one day. Please keep Adriana in your mind. She is the epitome of a good human being, and she doesn't deserve any of this. We welcome any prayers and positive thoughts during this chaotic journey, and we also welcome any recommendations of doctors/hospitals that may help her sensitive situation.
