Hello Friends and Family,
4 years ago our family’s world turned upside down.
In November of 2016 , My siblings and I woke up to my dad losing his energy. He fainted in my arms but continued to say he needed to go to work to support us; but he once again fainted downstairs which led us to call his boss in tears begging to send him home, in our hearts we felt something was off.
That’s where his journey began. In January / February 2017 my father was diagnosed with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome): an abnormality in his genes that is affecting his red blood cells, which can turn into leukemia if not treated. Red blood cells help the immune system.
My dad was getting blood transfusions and other medications at the VA in Phoenix. In the end of May 2019, the Dr there decided to treat him with a small dose of chemo shots that were given to him under his arms for 7 days. 2 weeks after finishing the shots, my twin sister forced my father to go to the hospital because he wasn’t looking good; his body began to shut down and his blood count was dangerously low at 4.7. That same day he was later admitted into the VA hospital’s ICU for 7 days. After the incident my father requested a referral to a different Dr. Now he is being treated at MD Anderson in Gilbert AZ
Drs there determined the best course of action would be a Stem Cell Transplant. In the meantime my father was receiving blood transfusions every 2 weeks, we recently got the news that his blasts are only being created at 2% and will now need blood transfusions more frequently, which depending on how many bags he needs, may take all day. Sometimes after his appointments he would go straight to work.
Mid February 2020, my father received a call from the VA that his transplant has been approved. This journey hasn’t been easy, although he is approved for the transplant we have no idea when it will happen due to having to find a 100% match. We are Praying for it will happen soon. Once our father begins the journey of receiving the transplant he will be in the ICU for 1-3 months, and out of work for 9-12 months after that; depending on how quickly his body will recover.
Our father works as a plumber and has been our main source of income and always our biggest support. As a plumber with this condition his body is slowly giving out, he comes home more tired than usual, paychecks are getting smaller due to being unable to work big remodel jobs, and to more frequent hospital visits. Everyday we’re reminded how tough this condition is not only on his body but on our family as well, slowly see him become more and more tired as the days go by.
The financial strain this diagnosis has placed on our family has been monumental, but will only grow as my dad continues through this journey. With this debilitating diagnosis it is difficult to determine how much longer our father will be able to continue to work.
Our father has always had a heart of Gold. He has always, and continues to go out of his way to help anyone in need; whether family, friend, or acquaintance. Now, we are asking that people help him and us in this time of need with Prayer, positive vibes, and also financially. whatever amount your heart nudges you to give. No donation is too big or too small. Please share and repost this post.
Our family wasn’t expecting to post this soon , but due to COVID-19, my father hasn’t worked since March 20th 2020. With everyones donations the money will be used for living expenses and cost of medication that is not being paid for by insurance.
