Recovering From: Complicated Sinusitis, Meningitis, Orbital Cellulitis and Cerebritis
A week ago, on Sunday December 1st, Adley and Scott were airlifted from the Medicine Hat airport to Calgary airport and then transported via ground ambulance to the Alberta Children’s Hospital as Adley had an aggressive attack of cellulitis of the eye. Stacey went home quickly to pack the bare necessities and drove to Calgary to meet up with us.
We were told in Medicine Hat emergency that if the bacteria got around behind the eye that our son could lose his eye (the bacteria did start to go behind the eye according the CT Scan in Medicine Hat). In addition, we were told that the infection had reached layers close to the brain.
The surgical team performed a surgery on Monday evening to clear the pus out of his sinuses. With the second MRI occurring on Friday, it did show that the fluid build-up close to the brain had increased slightly. All the specialists are keeping a close eye on Adley, he is having almost daily appointments with the ophthalmologist. Adley is being well cared for and has a team that includes Ophthalmologists, Ear-Nose-Throat Specialists, Infectious Disease Specialists, and multiple Pediatricians, not to mention all the wonderful nurses that have been looking after Adley around the clock. Adley had another minor procedure to insert a picc-line as he will need antibiotics twice daily for the next 6-7 weeks with an MRI slotted at the end of the treatment period to evaluate current medical status.
With the most recent update, Adley has been referred by the ophthalmologist to an ophthalmologist in Medicine Hat however the rest of Adley’s medical team needs to give clearance for him to return to Medicine Hat to continue his medical treatment close to home. His main pediatrician also stopped by to do her evaluation, and said she was speechless at how well Adley looked; she also gave her clearance to return to Medicine Hat for further treatment. That only leaves both the Infectious Disease Specialists and the Ear-Nose-Throat Specialists to give their referrals to have Adley return to Medicine Hat.
Prayers and support have been overwhelming from friends and family. We thank everyone who has prayed or stopped by for a visit with Adley. We are trying to keep costs to a minimal, however it is always difficult having family away from home and dealing with increased expenses such as parking and food. We both find it difficult to ask for assistance, however with Stacey being off work for an indeterminate amount of time, we are asking for your help to cover costs and lost income. The sick irony is that we were going to look into medical insurance for our family for events like this in December, but circumstances dictated otherwise. If you can help, we would highly appreciate it.
