My dearest friends are in need of your help.
It's been almost 15 months since Carl found out he had a brain tumor (later diagnosed as malignant cancer) and exactly one year ago (May 30th, 2017) since Carl has been able to work.
From the start, he's been battling the pain of incessant headaches and in January 2017, he had surgery to remove a build up of fluid on his brain. The headaches continued and a deeper study of his MRIs showed an inoperable tumor between the two hemispheres of his brain. It wasn't much longer after that that the doctors determined that Carl's cancer had spread to his cerebral spinal fluid, known as leptomeningeal disease (Click to learn more ). With this diagnosis, Carl needed to have the highest dose of chemo he could followed by treatments of Avastin which is supposed to interfere with the growth of cancer cells.
This latest treatment did not work and the cancer growth in the spinal fluid prevented the fluid from draining from his brain as it normally would. This ultimately led to two additional surgeries to relieve the pressure build up around the brain as well as the insertion of a shunt to aid with the fluid drainage. Due to the progression of the disease, Carl will again have radiation treatments (starting this week 5/30/17) as well as look into immunotherapy treatments.
On a daily basis, Carl's pain level is often a 10 out of 10. The strong narcotics only seem to help so much. What gives him the most relief, however, is the alternative cannibus treatments he has been supplementing with. These treatments cost about $800 a month and with his limited disability income, the struggle to afford these treatments has quickly been realized.
