My neice Maddie  was in a car accident about a month ago, and although the CT scan found no injuries to her neck, it did pick up a 4.2 cm mass on her thyroid. After an ultrasound determined it was a nodule, she then had a biopsy, with "inconclusive" results. So, she had surgery last week to remove half of her thyroid. Today she had her stitches removed, and the pathology report confirmed she has Papillary Thyroid Cancer. Surgery is set for next Thursday, January 14 to remove the rest of her Thyroid. In the meantime, she will have a scan to ensure that nothing has spread to her Lymph Nodes.

Maddie is 22 years old and was let go from her retail job when she asked for time off for her surgery and recovery.  Her employer told her  "it was best they separate as they couldn't hold a position for her and she hasn't been working there long enough to give her a leave." She and her family are devestated.
