Hello all. My name is Adia Mimms. I am a Senior Biology major in my last couple of credits before graduating. For the past year or so, my family has been hit with financial hardship. Without airing out our business too much, we had a big change in our family unit that caused a lot of stress, heartache, and legal costs. My original graduation date was set for May ‘23, but after taking a semester abroad and realizing I had more credits to finish than I thought, it got pushed back a semester. Little did I know, because of the financial hardship that was about to hit my family, I would have to take a gap year to work, then another gap semester, and another.

I have one bio lab class left to take so I can graduate. I took classes half at Ball State and half at Butler this past Spring to save money on per-credit tuition. I was also working a job during this time and still am. What I make is barely enough to pay for my basic needs and is in no way able to pay Butler. We still owe Butler money for the spring ($5,040), and I am not allowed to schedule classes until we pay them off, and the balance is about to go to collections. It continues to accrue interest. I got my credit above 650 and tried to apply for a student loan but could not find a co-signer. I cannot get a better job in my field so I can have money for school and living expenses until I have my bachelor's degree. I will need more than $6000 for my last class I’ll take in the spring ($2030 per 1 credit) but for now I need to pay Butler back just so I can schedule my final class. I majored in biology so I can become a Primary Care Physician and help black people, queer people, and other minorities feel safer coming to the doctor. I’m passionate about being a familiar face and safe space so that our community can prevent underlying health issues from becoming lethal.  

I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. Please, any little thing will help. I need to graduate by this Spring but I must apply for my last class as soon as possible.
