Adele's artist residency at SFAI

Aloha! My name is Adele Balderston and I'm a social practice artist and geographer based in Honolulu, Hawai'i. I work at the intersection of geography, art and activism to combat socio-spatial inequality and I need your help to attend my very first artist residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico!

I've been awarded a two-month residency at SFAI beginning April 2018, during which I plan to expand on my 88 Block Walks project. The theme of this interdisciplinary residency is "Equal Justice," so SFAI is bringing together "artists, creative practitioners, and content experts from all over the world to explore how art can be used to engage systems of power and transform systems of structural oppression. "

Until now, my 88 Block Walks project has taken place exclusively in Kaka'ako, but this residency is an opportunity to test my ideas in a new place, with the goal of developing new tools for advocacy that can be used by anyone, anywhere. I'm very excited about this opportunity to work in a new setting, meet new collaborators, and discover new ways of creating more equitable places through my unique brand of storytelling.

The residency is subsidized so I don't have to pay for live/work space while I'm there, but I still need to buy plane tickets (~$850 round trip), food (broke diet of $300/month), art supplies ($250), health insurance ($250/month), pay my bills ($350/month), make arrangements for my cat in Honolulu, and have enough leftover for rent when I get back home in June!

Can you help?

The first 50 people who donate $20 or more will receive a handmade postcard from Santa Fe during my residency.

The first 100 people who donate $50 or more will receive a limited-edition 11x14" map print from my last tour—Walk #5: The Living Archive.
The first two people in Honolulu who donate $100 will receive a gift certificate from O'ahu Fresh good for one month of weekly farmer's market bags!

Anyone who donates $500 or more will receive a personalized walking tour delivered either in-person or via audio (depending on your location)

Mahalo in advance for your kōkua <3
