Hello!

My name is Adebayo Chris,

I am 25 years old and I identify as a black trans man or FTM (female to male). I came to Canada 4 years ago (August 2016) for the IGLA aquatics swimming competition that took place at Kinsmen Sports Center. https://globalnews.ca/video/2874449/ugandan-swimmers-in-edmonton-recount-police-raid-on-lgbtq-event-share-challenges/

In these competitions, I won 8 gold medals and 1 silver medal which I was so grateful for. Unfortunately, before I came to Canada, I was arrested after the police stormed the Mr. & Miss gay Pride pageant in Uganda. I was the recent winner of the pageant in 2015 but I was unable to pass on the title & crown due to police interruption and arrests. https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/08/05/uganda-police-attack-lgbti-pride-event

While here in Canada, I was outed by the National news and my family kicked me out due to fear of prosecution, I took a lifesavingdecision to stay in Canada. I applied for a Refugee status and luckily, I was granted status and I am currently a permanent resident. https://nationalpost.com/sports/transgender-ugandan-swimmer-once-arrested-and-persecuted-at-home-attains-refugee-status-in-canada

For the past 3 years, while some folks are working and saving money, I dedicated my time voluntarily advocating for other LGBTIQ+ Refugees in Canada and across the globe. In 2017, in partnership with Lazy Kitten Production we created a documentary film Along Road to Peace. Which can be viewed by the link below (https://www.lazykittenproductions.com/a-long-road-to-peace)where we interviewed half a dozen of Queer & Trans refugees and newcomer, the film highlighted the stories and struggles of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in Canada. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/edmonton-refugees-alberta-lgbtq-documentary-1.4677680

I have shared my story and knowledge to the community in Canada, in all forms from attending conferences to presenting to University Students about the struggles of LGBTIQ Refugees and Newcomers community. I have found a home (Not-for-profit organization) www.raricanow.orgthat aims at promoting human rights for LGBTIQ refugees in Canada while prioritizing the needs of transgender immigrants and refugees and creating awareness about the unique population.

I have organized a lot of events in different categories in the community though my Trans Advocacy has been the foundation of everything. Some of these events have actually made me a target of Nazis and white supremacists in Alberta who have previously threatened to end my beautiful life, This although, has not made me stop doing the advocacy that I embarked on sometime back and I am not about to stop although with much consideration of my safety as well.

It has been recently last year in April 2019 that I started my medical transitioning with hormonal therapy which is extremely crucial to my development. The process is very expensive and I am not covered so this means I have to buy the hormones and the needles which has been and still quite expensive for me. I must admit though that I am experiencing a lot of changes including voice deepening, loss of menstruation cycle, growth in muscle mass etc.

I have my chest reconstruction surgery coming up closely in a few months, this means I will be at rest home until I recover from the surgery and I won't be able to work at my part time job which has been holding me tight with paying off my bills and rent. By the virtue of this forthcoming struggle, I therefore humbly ask for your support financially, mentally and socially. Had I had any family members to rely on, I wouldn’t have taken this bold move but since all of them deserted me for my sexuality, I have to rely on you for your kind support through this entire process. Your support and help will be highly appreciated.

l am also planning on egg freezing hopefully a few months after my top surgery and the entire process requires over $5,000 and then later after I will be going into a Hysterectomy and bilateral Salpingo- Oophorectomy (BSO).

I am raising money to help with my medical transitioning journey. I am currently in desperate need for help with the medical supplies these include needles, hormones, wipes, sharp collectors and the only way I can see myself getting through is by planning a head & getting all the supports that l can get for a safe transitioning journey. l am hoping to raise $5,000 but I know this is a very steep amount but any little bit helps. I have recently raised $800 on Facebook that helped me to cover some costs on medical supplies that I have been using and psychological therapy for mental health to cope and manage the effects of this whole new experience and present trauma. After these past months, I know it is not as easy as it sounds and I can definitely ask for some help!

Honestly, I feel so humbled and grateful for the support this community has shown me since 2016 and from the bottom of my heart; I THANK YOU ALL.

“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

Nobody in life wants to stand alone, I personally cannot stand alone in this whole thing and that's why I am asking for your help. Anything helps, anything counts and every bit of help small or big is very paramount!
