Hello family and friends,
Many of you have expressed an interest in helping our daughter Cambria, our son-in-law Keoni Hayashibara and their family. I think the easiest way to help is by reducing their financial burden for Keoni's medical treatments which are not covered by insurance. The funds raised will be used for the upcoming treatments for his chronic post-herpetic pain.
In 2020, Keoni was very sick (he had a virus that led to pneumonia) and then broke out with shingles on his right upper torso. The shingles caused nerve damage in his back area and upper torso. Excruciating pain has continued since then. The pain makes it difficult to live, work, and raise three small children. Cambria left her nursing job to stay home with the kids and help manage all home and health related tasks. Through his medical health plan, Keoni has tried every medication (on and off label) from his pain management team, many consistent months of acupuncture/Chinese medicine, chiropractic therapy, red light therapy, herbal products, peptides, a surgically implanted spinal nerve stimulator, and other alternative care measures. One treatment provided a short-term, slight decrease in pain, but required significant time off work, mileage on the car, fuel expenses, and time away from his family and was not sustainable.
Keoni and Cambria have incurred two major financial hits in trying to treat his debilitating pain. The first was the purchase of a medical machine that helps confuse the signal being sent from the brain/body and changes it from pain to no pain. The purchase of this machine has enabled regular treatments to be done from home when the pain is most severe so that Keoni can continue working. The cost of the machine was $40,000.
Recently, a promising, new treatment opportunity has come up. This is an IV stem cell therapy that will, hopefully, get to the root of the problem by promoting regrowth of the Myelin sheath on the damaged nerves. This new treatment ($25-30,000 ) requires Keoni to be away from family and job for 5 days in late April. He will also be part of a study that will document his progress for a year, and will require additional time away from home for the follow-up treatments.
Cambria and Keoni are always willing to help and serve others. I hope this account gives others an opportunity to show their support. If you know co-workers, or friends who would like to help, please pass this along.
We believe in the power of prayer and thank you for yours on their behalf already.
