Adapted bike for Daren to support his stroke rehab

£8,975 of £8,000 goal

Raised by 71 people in 3 months
On 16th January 2017, in the early hours of his 50th birthday, Daren Smith had a stroke. He is recovering through specialist physiotherapy and the support of his family and friends. Daren is passionate about cycling and bikes and as part of his rehabilitation he has been using the adapted bikes at East Park in Hull. He has limited mobility (although this is improving) and we would like to raise some money to purchase an adapted bike so that that Daren can have access to it closer to home and to ride on a more regular basis. We are looking to raise this money in the next 6 months. Daren is a strong, determined and focused man and it would be incredible if we could help him out in this way to help him to achieve his goal, support him in his recovery and give him some independence.

Hi all - today we've been test riding a bike in York and we're getting close to placing an order for one! Daren, Anne and Alan want to pass on their thanks to everyone who has donated and is supporting him! The bike is a side by side tandem, has 3 levels of power assist, each rider can change through 8 gears independently, the seat swivels 90 degrees to help with getting on and off (the driver steers, brakes and changes gear and the passenger pedals and changes gear). Daren's short term goal is to ride a 10 mile time trial (we will remove the battery ;-) and his long term goal is to ride coast to coast!

Hi everyone - well, we've had an amazing weekend and few days following the Humber Bridge Sportive! With the support of the organisers at the Humber Bridge Sportive, R-evolution (transporting the bike), Hull City Council - Culture and Leisure Team (for allowing us to loan the bike for the event), Dave Egeh (for arranging the bike loan), Pete Kitching (wingman on the bike), Brian and John from Ken Ellerker Cycles, Daren's parents and friends and family...Daren rode for 6 miles across the bridge to Barton and back! A significant achievement given that his previous PB has been 3 miles around East Park. Sunday Girls Road Club presented a cheque to Daren at the Sportive and Hull Daily Mail have featured Daren's story. This has all helped to raise awareness and through people's generosity the funds raised have tipped the £3000 mark which is amazing in just over a month! Thank you everyone for your continued support - we will pass on all of your best wishes and messages to Daren!
