PLEASE help Adam get his miracle cure
I feel humiliated begging for money online, but this is for our wee boy who has been desperately ill, so I’m swallowing my pride and here I go.
Just under three years ago, our six-year-old Adam became unwell with an unexplained illness. His personality completely changed and he lost all interest in everything, favouring lying on the sofa under a blanket. It lasted a few months with the local Dr telling us it was a viral infection until he was sent home from school with a left sided facial paralysis. This quickly developed into full facial paralysis; he couldn’t close his eyes, his tongue was numb, he couldn’t swallow and he couldn’t talk properly. He was terrified.
We discovered he had been bitten on the head by a tick (he had a rash that had been misdiagnosed), it infected him with Lyme disease and the bacteria had gone into his brain. He had bacterial meningitis. The doctors put him on a drip with antibiotics going into his blood stream, and it was touch-and-go for the three worst weeks of my life. He endured a barrage of invasive tests, procedures and general anaesthetics.

Our brave little boy pulled through, but the infection did some damage to his brain, and we now know he hadn't had enough antibiotics to get rid of the infection properly. His face was still paralysed on one side, he couldn’t eat or drink properly, and he forgot most of what he had worked so hard to learn at school. He used to love sports but now he could hardly walk straight. He was really upset that he couldn’t remember how to write his name any more and he went back to having toilet accidents, but the thing that made him cry was when he was teased for having slurred speech and not being good at sports any more.

I worked as a nurse for the NHS for 15 years and I loved taking care of people. I never imagined my own son would end up so ill from late and inadequate treatment that I would need to give up the career I loved, and stay home to look after him.
We read up a lot about Lyme disease and found out that doctors have no real way of testing if someone is cured. Some people get better after taking antibiotics for a lot longer than Adam got.
Adam had a delay in treatment and was under-treated. He continued to have persistent serious ill health and we found a private doctor who has specialised in this illness for 30 years. He did tests that found Adam needed more antibiotics, and could probably go back to his old self if we finally eradicated the infection.
So we spent all our savings on medicine, medical checks and blood tests. Unfortunately we have exhausted our finances and now we are asking for help to finish his course of treatment to finally let him lead a life the same as his peers. If he does not receive further treatment, there is every likelihood that the infection will once again gain the upper hand and Adam's improvements will disappear, he will relapse and become very ill again.
Two years on, the improvement in Adam so far has been nothing short of miraculous. There are no toilet accidents, he can talk just fine, and his face doesn’t droop at all unless he’s really tired. His school has supported him to re-learn what he had lost and helped him with his memory losses and processing problems. He’s been going out delivering Lyme disease information leaflets and given a talk at school to warn other people how to be careful of this illness, as unfortunately our area is a Lyme disease hotspot. His aim in life is to make sure that no other kid in Britain ever catches Lyme disease.
Best of all, he can participate in sports again and doesn’t have to take days off school afterwards to recover. He has started to play and cuddle his little brother again and make us all laugh with their games. I hadn’t seen that old Adam for so long it made me cry. But his recovery is precarious.

I ran out of money last Month and so his treatment will stop when his current medication bottles are empty. We are nearly there, I hope he has been treated enough, but the doctor said he most likely needs a few more months.
In my heart of hearts I know this brilliant doctor is right. Adam is backsliding and I am literally desperate now to finish his treatment. The doctor helped us to keep our costs down but he can’t help with the cost of Adam’s medicines and blood tests, so we still need to raise funds.
Here’s the estimate of what it will take to get him better:
£2850 :-
Blood testing, 2 more expected £1500
Medication, 2 more refills £600
Telephone appointments £340
Appointment in Germany £250
Further antibiotics £160
If we have anything left over from our fundraising for Adam and we are in a position to be discharged from his Dr, we will donate it to a charity of Adam’s choice.

Here are some links about Lyme disease. Adam wants you to read these and make ABSOLUTELY SURE you don’t get bitten by any wicked ticks and never catch Lyme disease.
If you can’t afford anything to help Adam with his treatment, at least please help him warn other children about the dangers of Lyme disease, by sharing this information with your friends.
